SS. Peter and Paul Cem. He found other outlets for the often impertinent, sometimes vulgar humor that tended to shock audiences as much as it amused them. He and fellow comedian Thierry le Luron staged a mock marriage last year to poke fun at an elaborate wedding planned for a popular television newscaster. Coluche, wearing a traditional white bridal dress with a blond wig, and le Luron, in a morning coat and top hat, were taken by a horse-drawn carriage to a reception at a restaurant on the Champs Elysees, to the amusement of nearly 1,000 spectators.

The two said they did it because they could not bear to see the magazines and newspapers monopolized by Yves Mourousi, host of a midday news program. Campaigning in standard costume yellow tennis shoes, seersucker overalls and a red-white-and-blue sash Coluche took on France's leading figures. He ridiculed Communist leader Georges Marchais as "the only candidate who is trying harder than I am to lose the election." He promised to give up politics if Marchais would give up being a clown. And he gave candidates' policies much the same treatment, noting that Marchais was not opposed to immigration: "He applauded when the Russians went into Afghanistan." After five months of campaigning, withdrew from the race, complaining that his opponents were getting all the laughs. OBITUARIES Coluche, Coluche, 41, France's most popular comedian and sometime presidential candidate, was killed yesterday when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck at Opio near Grasse on the Riviera.

The comedian, who delighted his audiences by mocking politicians, and poking fun at other well-known figures, was also a humanitarian who set up a chain of "restaurants of the heart" to feed poor people during the winter. Off stage and out of the public eye, the comedian traveled under his real name Michel Colucci and spent much of his time preparing or racing his motorcycle. Last year, he tried to break a world motorcycling speed record on an Italian track. Police said he was riding alone on Deaths elsewhere Russell W. Dayton, 75, an engineer who helped develop both the photocopying system and the nuclear submarine, died Wednesday at his home in Worthington, Ohio.

His interest in xerography led Bat-telle Memorial Institute in Columbus to develop the process until the Haloid Co. took it over and changed its name to Xerox. "He was the first person at Battelle to sense the importance of Chester Carlson's process of xerography," said Battelle spokesman Jim Hunkler. "He changed the world's idea of office copying." After World War II, Mr. Dayton coordinated research at Battelle that led to the first nuclear-powered submarine, the Nautilus, Hunkler said.
