2" Section 1 Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, July 15, 1998 NEWSMAKERS Hevrdejs CONKLIN INC. T7T IS John litis Associates, bumped into Tom on Michigan Avenue on Monday and the actor, in dark glasses, was en route to a movie. Kevin too: By Friday, Costner leaves Chicago with a lot of overheated fans in his wake. That's the way it looked to us at Monday's SRO "Evening With Kevin Costner" at the historical society that turned love fest fast As Costner strode on stage, the audience erupted in a standing and squealing ovation. (Women outnumbered men 2-1, with more skin-tight clothing than an aerobics class.) Costner, with daughter Annie, graciously endured an onslaught of questions.

He mentioned "Message" will be out on Valentine's Day, prompting the audience to gush "Awww." Laughed Costner "This is a really nice room." Pol watch: The Illinois AFL-CIO Tuesday endorsed the Democrats' statewide slate of candidates, from U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun down. INC. hears Moseley-Braun opponent Peter Fitzgerald turned down a joint appearance with her on CNBC-TV's "Hardball." At last word, they will appear on separate shows.

Film at 10: Here is every golfer's dream: Sink a putt on the last hole to win big dough. WBBM-Ch. 2's Jay Levine got to do that Tuesday at Kemper Lakes in the Ameritech Senior Open's charity "Skins game" against Pam Shriver, WGN-Ch. 9's Dan Roan and WMVP-AM's Steve Cochran. The putt by Jay, teamed with Bruce Crampton, meant $12,000 for Dunbar High School and never mind it was only 12 inches.

Hoop SCOOp: Ex-Bulls coachmotivator Phil Jackson has worked his magic on musicianhoops nut Bruce Hornsby. He convinced Hornsby to join him in a teaching stint at the Omega Institute of Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, N.Y. "The same week Phil's doing his basketball clinic, I'm giving a music clinic," Hornsby told an INC. source. "My course is about spontaneity in music.

And I have no idea what I'm going to do." Passages: Wednesday birthdays: Kim Alexis, 38; Brian Austin Green, 25; Alex Karras, 63; Leon Lederman, 76; Brigitte Nielsen, 35; Linda Rondstadt, 52; Jan-Michael Vincent, 54; Forest Whitaker, 37. Remember When: The Bears were good and were offered parts in movies. Now the Green Bay Packers are the darlings with Brett Favre making his big screen debut in 'There's Something About Mary" with Cameron Diaz. Favre was a real pro on the Florida set signing 200 footballs for the crew. Garbage trails Madonna in award nominations LOS ANGELES Madonna got nine nominations Tuesday for MTV Video Music Awards, followed by the pop band Gar-, bage with eight.

The maternal one's "Ray of Light" received eight nominations, including one for best video of the year. Her "Frozen" got one for special effects. All of Garbage's nominations were for "Push It," including the group video, alternative and direction categories. The Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Chumbawamba, Natalie Imbruglia and Mase were nominated for new artist. Will Smith had six nods, including viewer's choice for "Gettin" Jiggy Wit It." The awards show will air Sept.

10. Judge Wapner on cable to talk with the animals HOLLYWOOD-Judge Wapner is back, but instead of "People's Court," he will be ruling on pet-related lawsuits on "Animal Court," according to Variety. In Wapner's syndicated "People's Court," plaintiffs and defendants agreed to have their disputes settled on the TV court show. Now, people will let Wapner rule on cases such as disputes over veterinary malpractice, grooming disasters and pet-paternity disputes. "Judge Wapner's Animal Court" will premiere on Discovery Network's Reuters photo Love-in: After the announcement Tuesday of nominees for the MTV Music Video Awards, singer Courtney Love meets the press with Richard Riordan, mayor of Los Angeles.

Costner, Hanks and would you believe I Jack Nicholson? Tom Hanks was in town Tuesday to publicize his new film, "Saving Private Ryan." Kevin Costner wrapped up filming "Message in a Bottle" here. Is that as good as it gets? Not really. Enter Jack Nicholson, who touched down late Tuesday at O'Hare International Airport on a return from World Cup festivities in Paris. Nicholson, seeing he had a layover in Chicago before changing planes for L.A. and ravenous because he doesn't like airline food called Gibson's Steakhouse over the Atlantic from his Air France flight.

His order: The steak sandwich he had there several weeks ago during the NBA finals, onion rings with barbecue sauce, house salad with vinaigrette dressing, sauteed spinach with garlic and some carrot cake. Gibson's publicist Roxanne Atkins got to the airport on time with the goodies. She met dozens of passengers awed by being on the flight with Jack but no Jack. Turns out the actor had been escorted to a private room and was waiting with his own napkin in hand. "I had a really good time," said Nicholson, of his visit to France.

And Roxanne? "He was as nice as could be." More Hanks: Hanks and "Saving Private Ryan" director Steven Spielberg spent six hours in interviews here Tuesday before leaving on a private jet Popular historian Stephen Ambrose, on hand to vouch for the World War II film's veracity, also participated in the session. How did Hanks prep for this grind? Local Animal Planet on Sept. 28. Ex-CNBC talker Charles Grodin has landed a spot on MSNBC. "Charles Grodin" will debut 8 p.m.

Saturday, using much the same monologue-and social-issues format as the old show. Grodin said Tuesday his more serious approach leaves him labeled a bleeding-heart liberal, but he doesn't mind. One of his first guests is Ralph Nader. "If I'm not on and Phil Donahue is not on, then Ralph Nader and the Ralph Naders of the world really don't have a place to go," he said. Designer changes mind about having pope sing ROME Italian designer Kean Etro on Tuesday abandoned plans to send a model down the catwalk to the sound of a singing Pope John Paul.

Etro decided against using a rock arrangement of a Gregorian chant dubbed over with the pope singing after Vatican officials warned they were ready to take legal action. Etro insisted his intent had not been sacrilegious.
