The flick will air in June on the Disney Channel. Andy Griffith and Lori Lethin will play father-daughter attorneys Ben and Charlene Matlock in Matlock, an NBC drama to air March 3. Mechem's father is Charles Mechem, chairman of the board of Taft Broadcasting which owns Channel 29. LaMay says he knew of Mechem's parentage before he hired him and that it had no effect on his decision. (Mechem, 25, was recommended by Terry Connelly, Taffs vice presi- dent for news.) "The fact is he's a good reporter," says LaMay. "I feel very comfortable having him here." Mechem, a 1982 graduate of Ken- yon College, began his career as a press aide to former U.S. Rep.

George O'Brien of Chicago. He cov- ered politics for Cape Cod CableVi-sion in 1984 before joining Capitol Broadcast News in Washington, where he did political stories for local stations around the country, including Philadelphia's WPV1-TV. "I talked to Roger a lot about my father when he hired me," says Mechem, who will cover transportation and business stories. I think Roger and Henry assistant news director Henry Bonillal think I am. I wouldn't be here if didn't think I was qualified."
