He (Jied two'. weeks after he was diagnosed as having lung Mr. Bruhn, who had been the ballet's artistic director since the middle of 1983, was its choreographer, dance coach and director of repertoire. His appointment culminated a 20-year association with the National Ballet as both dancer and choreogra- pher.

He was known in the United States as a leading dancer with the American Ballet Theater, a handsome, blond, well-muscled performer who leaped to fame in 195S when he appeared with the company in Giselle. His subsequent appearances with such stars as Maria Tallchief in Miss Julie were before capacity audiences. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, he 1 graduated from the Royal Danish Ballet School in 1947. He made his professional debut with the Metropolitan Ballet in England, but he was quickly drawn back to his homeland 4 Thursday, April 3, 1986 and joined the Royal Danish Ballet. For years he divided his time between the Danish company and the American Ballet Theater, with time out for a staggering number of guest appearances, ranging from- work with the New York City Ballet to the Bolshoi Ballet.

He danced with nearly every great ballet company across the world, performing with such partners a Carla. Fracci, Alicia Alonso Cynthia Gregory and Jiatalia Makarova. He began his relationship with the National Ballet. 'of Canada with his, 1964 staging of Iq Sylphide. From 1967 through 1971 he also served as artistic director of the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm.

Though he retired from leading roles in 1972, he continued to appear in character parts. He recently commissioned a new work, Alice, by Glen Tctley. The work, inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, is to have its U.S. premier in July at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. An appreciation of Erik Bruhn, a dancer's dancer.

Jag1" George L. Walsh, 065 was pioneer in Phila. television George Walsh, 56, former program director for Channel 6 and a pioneer in the development of television in Philadelphia, died Tuesday in Altoona, Pa. A former resident of the Bustleton section, he lived in Holli-daysburg, south of Altoona. A native of Philadelphia; he grew up in Frankford and watched television go from test patterns and studio orchestras to variety shows and amateur hours.

Guessing that television would grow into an industry in its own right, Mr. Walsh, then a 21-year-old looking for opportunity, took a job as an apprentice cameraman with Channel 6. then known as WFIL-TV. That' was in 1951, a time when Sports and news were aired on an almost experimental basis. As Lewis Klein, former president of Gateway Communications and Mr.

Walsh's former boss, recalls it, the apprentice cameraman fit right in. Relaxed, popular, happy, outgoing i 4 n-nnrmtir wnro InHolg rrvwnrtr- -o ers applied to the new man. So he seemed to be the man for the job, any job. In the years that followed, he worked as cameraman, studio crew chief, producer, director, production manager and, in 1966, program director. Those were years when he put Dick Clark and his American Bandstand on the air, when Gene London.

Al Alberts, Chief Halftown and Sally Starr's programs were virtually unchallenged. He also handled coverage of Phillies games and directed production of the then-new 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. He also found time to produce two award-winning documentary Sorrow on the Rocks, a film on alcoholism, and Exploring the Fine Arts.
