Buonocore was one of five Americans killed when terrorists lobbed grenades and fired automatic weapons into a crowd at Leonardo da Vinci Airport on Dec. 27. He had planned to return home for his father's 50th birthday, which was the day of the attack. "When a young man dies, and especially when he dies from a senseless, tragic death, our community hurts," Mr. McDermott said in his eulogy.

"To become well-known in a short period of time takes a lot of sacrifices," the priest added. "I felt I know what his wish would be: 'Now go on and live your life to the Dickinson College President Samuel A. Banks, the only one of four speakers eulogizing Buonocore who spoke of the terrorist attack, said he. would not discourage other students from traveling abroad. "We have the clearest mandate I know not to have our young people live in the fortress of America," he said.

"We must build bridges faster than terrorists can burn them." Two Christmas trees wrapped in white lights and standing on both sides of a creche twinkled near the altar, as though forgotten from an earlier service, while Buonocore's oak casket was rolled up the aisle. Draped in a white cloth woven with the Christian symbols of alpha and omega in gold, the casket remained beside Buonocore's. family throughout the ceremony. As Buonocore's father, John Jr. mother, Cecile, and brother, Todd, 16, and the other mourners left the church, blue skies had broken through the heavy clouds, and an unseasonably warm January sun had burned off the fog.

Five of Buonocore's friends from Tower Hill and two from coHegexar- ried the casket, draped with a spray of daisies and red chrysanthemums and an American flag, to the grave at Brandywine Cemetery. At the conclusion of the service, Lt. Col. David lingerer, Buonocore's professor of military science, gave the folded flag to Cecile Buonocore. -Although mourners were invited to the Buonocores' house aw the service, clusters of the young man's friends lingered by his gray, not wanting to leave.

By Alison Carper Special to The Inquirer WILMINGTON Friends of John Buonocore 3d gathered yesterday to praise his life and mourn the senseless death of the 20-year-old Wilmington man who was caught in a cross fire-" of terrorist bullets in a Rome airport last week. had a joy for life that knew no bounds," Steve Hyde, Buonocore's high school football and basketball coach, said in a eulogy. "Our brother John," said the Rev. Michael McDermott, "lived life to the fullest." About 250 family members and friends many from Tower Hill, an exclusive preparatory school in Wilmington that Buonocore had attended, and Dickinson College in Carlisle, where he had been a junior braved fog and a cold morning rain to offer their farewells to Buonocore in an hour-long Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Church.

Both senators from Delaware, Republican William V. Roth Jr. and Democrat Joseph R. Biden also attended the service. -The size of the crowd spoke of Buonocore's popularity.

Hyde described him as a man endowed with a "iwinkle in his eye" and "a slow smile." a gout! bpui tlvue said, who not only would race to rescue every loose ball on the basketball court, but "at the same time was quick to shake hands with the opponent, no matter how grueling the defeat." Buonocore was praised as a talented athlete who became, as a sophomore, the youngest captain in the history of his college lacrosse team and a disciplined man who was chosen last year as Dickinson's outstanding ROTC cadet He was described as a student of Latin who was dedicated to his schoolwork and a high-epirited man wiro could add vitality to a party and offer optimism to a friend who was down. "That was what John put together so well The joy was the product," said Philip N. Lockhart, Buonocore's Latin professor at Dickinson. -Buonocore, a classics major, was in Italy for a academic ex-flange program. He completed the.
