The largest Purebred Hereford cattle operation in the middle West, sixth in the United States in number of registered Hereford brood cows, Northern Pump Company farms, is located on a tract in McHenry and Richmond townships. The farms, formerly known as the famous Hickory Creek Holstein farms, were purchased by Northern Pump company in 1953.

The Hereford cattle were moved here from a ranch located near Colorado Springs and from the Mill Iron ranch in Texas. Hereford cattle from Northern Pump farms have been sold to eighteen states, Canada, Mexico, West Germany, Austria and Japan. Many people interested in beef cattle from the United States, as well as foreign countries, have visited the farms. One of the major cattle breeding achievements is the winning of the Denver Champion Car Load Bull award. The Northern Pump herd is the only one located East of the Missouri River to achieve this honor.

The Northern Pump loads have come away with this top honor twice. The Farms have also produced several American Royal and Chicago International champions.
