I i- i Celebrations Planned For Gaiveston County "BicentennialEdition" Sunday Morning, February 29, 1976 a 9-1 By JOHN FERGUSON Festival USA Committee Chairman In Galveston County during the calendar year 1976 there will be more than a dozen festivals and celebrations. Part of the reason for this phenomenon is the fact that very good conditions for festivals exist climate, abundant beach front and splendid historic districts. But also festivals are a traditional way for people to get together and have fun. Festivals are then a "Celebration of In 1973-74 the American Revolution Bicentennial Adminstration (ARBA) recognised Galveston Island as one of three national pilot bicentennial project cities and the next year the National Endowment for The Arts in Washington awarded the Galveston County Cultural Arts Council a grant from the Expansion Arts Division to expand the Festival on The Strand as a regional tour event and model for other cities to follow.

The success of the Festival on The Strand has encouraged other local community groupr, to produce their own festivals making the island truly a festival city with six annual festivals: 1. Shrimp Festival. 2. Oleander Festival. 3.

Festival on The Strand. 4. Joy to the World Festival. 5. Dickens Night on The Strand Festival.

6. Glow of Christmas Festival. During the bicentennial year county-wide festivals will be promoted under the "Celebrate America" Festival USA Galveston County, Texas designation. Tills festival designation is part of the Total Celebration of America during the bicentennial calendar year and includes Heritage, Horizons and Festival events throughout the county.
