Scientists trying to head off recurrence of African gas disaster that killed 1,746 YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) - Convinced that another disaster lurks beneath Lake Nios, a team of experts begins today an operation to find and remove the deadly gas that emerged in 1986, killing 1,746 villagers. . . Using a remote-controlled mini-submarine, the experts from France and Cameroon in West Africa will search the bottom of the lake with an underwater television camera and data-collecting devices. Data will be radioed to the team's command post on shore, and transmitted to research laboratories worldwide through a U.S. government weather satellite, the Ministry of Mines said. The researchers hope the examination of the lake bottom's geological formations will uncover the sources of the carbon dioxide that rose from the lake Aug. 21, 1986, suffocating victims as they slept in nearby villages. Two years earlier, on Aug. 15, 1984, a similar eruption of gas at neighboring Lake Monoun killed 45 people. ' The exploratory operation is scheduled to last at least one month. The team hopes its findings will suggest the best approach for a second phase; re moving the trapped gas without releasing it into the atmosphere. Scientists estimated that 100 million cubic meters of toxic gas was released in the 1986 catastrophe and that about 250 million cubic meters remains. Minister of Mines Bello Mbelle said the gas pockets grow steadily. The specter of a new gas disaster has worried Cameroon authorities since 1986. Experts attending an international conference in France in 1990 concluded a new eruption was probable, and the lake was cited as a danger at a world conference on disasters held in Yokohama, Japan, last year. About 4,500 people were evacuated from their homes after the 1986 gas eruption, and many lived in tents for more than a year. Lake Nios and Lake Monoun are among more than 40 crater lakes in the volcanically active mountains of Cameroon. Some volcanologists believe molten rock built up steam at the bottom of the lakes and blew the toxic gas into the air.
