Steve Owens, who was a law student at Brown University when he first met Gore, was elected to a two-year term as state Democratic chairman. Owens worked on Gore's Senate staff for 6'j years and was a top aide for his 1988 presidential bid. Most recently, Owens helped raise money for the Clinton-Gore 1992 presidential race. That fund-raising ability will be an important part of his job for the next two years, said Owens, who plans to bring Gore into the state in the coming year for a party fundraiser.

He hopes to follow with Clinton in 1994, when the party tries to unseat Republican Gov. Fife Symington and the GOP majority in the Legislature. "We will have to work hard for the next two years to raise the money that we need in order to be successful in 1994," Owens said in his acceptance speech. "This will be a new era for the Democratic Party."
