and 12.46 The Ilydrofrraphic office has issued the following- forecast of the average conditions of wind and weather over the Xorth Atlantic Ocean during May. Summer conditions are practically established over the ocean during the month of May. Pressure. The central portion of the ocean is covered by an area of high pies- sure. (30.20 From sm-es having its centre or maximum inches) southwest of the Azores, the summit of this area the pres-diminish by easy stages In all di rections, depressions are few in number, and the winds surrounding them of no great intensity.

On the equatorial slope the diminution of pressure for each degree of latitude is slight, the distribution is uniform, and the changes from day to day are inconsiderable. On the polar slope the dimiuuation for each degree is relatively rapid, the distribution is irregular, and the changes from day to day rise to half an Inch or more. Along the transatlantic routes these changes of pressure consist in an alteration of periods throughout which the barometer is successively below and above the average, the wind backing to the southeast accompanied by foul weather and rain with falling barometer, becoming light and variable at the time of minimum, increasing in force and haulfng to westward in sudden shifts with clearing weather during the subsequent Steamships encounter more of these changes on a westward voyage than ou an eastward voyage. This is because the storms themselves move eastward and the steamer going east travels along with them. On the westward voyage the ship moves toward the approaching storms and is therefore likely to pass through more of such disturbances than when she travels eastward.

Winds. On the northern slope of tbj high pressure arci southerly to westerly winds prevail, easterly winds bring relatively infrequent. Along the Iraosatlan tie routes the frequency of westerly South-NXYV. 1 winds is as follows: West of 50 degrees, an per cent. (41 per cent, from the W.

quadrant): 55-45 degrees, 57 per cent. (3ti per cent, from SW. quadrant): 45-30 degrees. 60 per cent. (SO per cent, from SW.

quadrant! east of 00 degrees. 07 per cent. (So per cent, from SW. quadrant Along the American coast from Sandy Hook to llatteras southwesterly winds prevail (37 per cent.L South of Hatteras northeasterly 31 per ceut.L On the southern slope of the high pressure area moderate trades prevail with frequent rains. Temperature.

Moderate temperatures prevail over the transatlantic routes, ranging between 55 degrees and 65 degrees. South of parallel 30 degrees they range between. To degrees and degrees. dales. Cales.

as shown ou subchart, diminished r. per cent, in averag-e frequency compared with thoso of April. F'og. l-'og increases steadily duriug may. Tbe percentage of clays on which fog occurs reaches lit per cent, over limited areas to the eastward and southeastward of Newfoundland as far as the Flemish Cap.

also southwestward of Nova Scotia around Georges Shoal: 30 per cent, or more over an extensive area from the New England coast to longitude 54 degrees W. Very little fog occurs south of Ii degrees, except along the American coast, where it is occasionally eucounter-eil a far south as Cape Hatteras. A dispatch from New York states barge William II.
