Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, January 19, 1999 Section 3 7 OBITUARIES Theodore Kotlarz police detective A funeral should be not sold. Have you been solicited by a cemetery or funeral home telemarketer? It's easy to be enticed when a deal sounds too good to be true. When planning a funeral or cremation, be sure you are speaking with someone who is knowledgeable on all aspects of the service. Not someone looking to make a quick sale. We are licensed professionals specially trained to help you arrange a meaningful, affordable ceremony.

Count on us to be there for you with the same care and concern we've shown for over 125 years Smith-Corcoran By Maria Donato Tribune Staff Writer Theodore Kotlarz Jr, a Chicago police detective known for his razor-sharp wit and expertise in solving complicated white-collar financial crimes, died Saturday in Qur Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center of pancreatic cancer. -Detective Kotlarz, 48, was a Chicago police officer for 26 years. lifelong resident of the Northwest Side, he started his law-enforcement career even before graduating from Gordon Technical High School by enrolling in the Police Department's cadet program. Detective Kotlarz was first stationed in the Town Hall District in 1972 and worked as a beat officer until he was chosen in 1976 for the elite tactical undercover team, according to Rogers Park District Cmdr. Dave Boggs, who was Detective Kotlarz's sergeant on the undercover team "He had a very sharp mind and he could read people really well" Detective Kotlarz was awarded numerous commendations, according to Harrison Area Sgt Michael Siciliano, who said the detective met regularly with other financial investigators from the state, county and Justice Department.

He was an avid golfer who enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas. His hobby was woodworking. Detective Kotlarz was a member of the Polish American Police Association, St Jude's League and Knights of Columbus Father Francis A. Ryan Council 5025. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two sons, Theodore in and Scott his mother, Irene; two brothers, Stanley and Kenneth; and two sisters, Susan and Carolyn Miner.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Salerno's Galewood Chapels, 1857 N. Harlem Ave. Services will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Thursday in the funeral home's chapel with a mass to follow at 9:30 a.m. in St. Priscilla Catholic Church, 6949 W. Addison St Boggs said. "He was built like a bull, but he was a very non-threatening person.

He had the ability to talk to people to get their confidence both the offenders and victims Known affectionately by his colleagues as "Teddy" or "the Bull" because of his stocky stature, in 1982 Detective Kotlarz was transferred to the school patrol unit In 1986, he was promoted to detective in the property crimes division for the Harrison Area. He quickly became known as an expert in check fraud and financial crimes. Detective Kotlarz was a source of information for others both inside and outside the district as he was generous with both his expertise and wisecracks. "It was never vicious, but he was the type of guy you always had to be on guard for, because he liked to kid around a lot" said Harrison Area Detective Dan Stack. "Bottom line the city lost one of its best guys," Detective Jim Parker, his one-time partner said.

(773) 743-1020 1996 MK Marketing Andrew Boxer, 46; studied gay teens The Family You The Name You By Meg McSherry Breslin Tribune Staff Writer Andrew M. Boxer, 46, whose pioneering studies of gay and lesbian youths helped social service agencies better serve homosexual teens, died Wednesday of lung cancer in his home on the North Side of Chicago. Mr. Boxer was an assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the Evelyn Hooker Center for the Study of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health at the University of Chicago. His 1993 book, "Children of Horizons: How Gay and Lesbian Youth Are Leading a New Way Out of the Closet" co-authored with Gilbert Herdt of San Francisco State University, was among the first comprehensive studies of the psychological development of gay and lesbian adolescents.

It also documented the emergence of the first openly gay generation of gay and lesbian youths. Bruce Koff, former executive director of Horizons a Chicago social service agency for homosexual youths said Mr. Boxer's research helped agencies such as Horizons understand how homosexual youths deal with the stigma of their sexual identity. He also helped social service agencies map out programs for homosexuals to address their high risk for home-lessness, suicide and substance abuse, Koff said. A native of Colorado, Mr.

Boxer earned his bachelor's degree from Goddard College in Vermont and his doctorate in psychology from the U. of C. in 1990. In his early career, he was a program coordinator and later director of the Center for the Study of Adolescence at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. He also worked as an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and was a faculty member of the Institute for Psychoanalysis.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Boxer; two sisters, Helene Malek and Dr. Suzanne Sanders; and his life partner, Dr. Monte Het-land. Plans for a memorial service in Chicago are pending. rrr Family Services Weinstein Brothers Memorial Chapels Robert A.
