Shenk, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Shenk Marmon Trailer Court, reported ly walked into the side of a 1948 car driven by Clarence E. Hughes, 72, RFD 1, as the boy and his mother crossed Main in the 1500 block.

"As soon as this car passes, you go," Mrs. Shenk reportedly told the boy. Officers said the youth probably misjudged the dis tance. He reportedly suffered bruises on the forehead, chin and knee. Two In Jail A pair of El Paso, men are being held here for Chase County authorities.

Donald Walter Thompson, 21, and William Joseph Bukovac, 19, wanted in connection with the theft of a television set from a Cottonwood Falls motel, were arrested about 1:45 a.m. by officers Fred Espinosa and Larry Wright. 8th, about 4:30. Chapman reportedly backed a truck in the 200 block on West 2nd, where it and a car driven by John E. Chamberlin, 38, 711 S. Oak, collided. No injuries were reported.

Deaths JAMES VERNON MURPHY James Vernon Murphy, 74, Wellsville, died June 11 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. He was born July 7, 1887, in Bloomingrove, Tex. He lived in Wellsville for the past 12 years. He worked as an automobile mechanic and night marshall in Wellsville. He was a member of Wellsville Masonic Lodge 356.

Survivors include the widow, Beulah, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Patricia Stonequist, Wellsville; a son, James Murphy, Portland, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Rev. Homer Ganong will conduct the service at 2 p.m. Thursday at Coughlin Chapel in Wellsville.

Masonic graveside services will be read at the Wellsville Cemetery. HOWARD GRIFFIN Howard Cleland Griffin, 44, Pomona, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Menorah Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He became ill while working on a construction job June 11 and was taken to Menorah Hospital. He was born Sept.

1, 1917, in Burlingame. He served in World War II and was a member of Local Union 1290, Olathe. Survivors include one daughter, Hazel Marie Griffin, of the home; five brothers, Kenneth H. Griffin, Ottawa, and Graden W. Griffin, Clinton W.

Griffin, William D. Griffin and Darrell L. Griffin, all of Pomona, and two sisters, Mrs. R. A.

Reed, Ottawa, and Mrs. Floyd Yockey, Pomona. Rev. Roy A. Pick will conduct the service at Towner's Chapel at 2 p.m.

Thursday. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg. Rotarians Hear Talk On Welfare A talk on the work of the County Welfare Department, which Norman Rogers gave at the Rotary club meeting, was in the nature of a farewell to his fellow Rotarians. Rogers will leave this weekend to take a position at Parsons in the Labette County Welfare Department.

He will be case supervisor there as he has been here. He has been in the Franklin county office for two years. In his talk, he spoke of welfare operations as being 70 to 75 per cent as service to clients. He said the department had contacts with state hospitals and other institutions, including penal institutions. He opposed medical aid as proposed by the Kennedy bill as not serving as adequately as the present Kerr-MiUs law.

Those really in need would be better served under the present law, he said. Robert Smith, public relations representative of the State Employment department at Topeka, was a guest. Pomona Newt Band Begins Practice; Plan Concert By CAROLYN DUSIN Band practice was in the multi-purpose room of the Grade School June 11.

Mrs. A. L. Welborn, director, is planning a concert sometime this summer. So far no date has been set.

The band plans to start marching to practice for the fairs and the upcoming football season. The next band practice is to be Monday, June 18, at 7 p.m. Sunday callers at the home of Mrs. Clara Nitcher and Margaret McNeese were Mr. and Mrs.

Vacation Bible School at the Methodist Church starts Monday, June 18, and will continue to June 29. It is to be Monday through Friday, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the church basement. Flinsbaugh, 19, RFD 2, Wellsville, also was cited on a charge of driving 70 miles an hour in a 60-mile zone. Tractor Mishap Kills Kansan PLAINS, Kan. (AP)-Darrell E.

Harvey, 19, lost his life Tuesday in a tractor accident six miles east of here on a county road. The, highway patrol said the tractor overturned in a ditch filled with water. Harvey, son of Keith Harvey and Mrs. Irene Harvey, both of Liberal, attended Fort Hays State College last school year. He made his home with his grandparents here.
