Thursday, June 9, 1988 The Philadelphia Inquirer 21 -B Death Notices Death Notices OBITUARIES M.J. McGuinness Woodbury civic leader DePaul Society for 22 years. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society. Mr. McGuinness was a past president of St.

Patrick's PTA and of the St. Pius Retreat League in Blackwood. He was a member and past grand knight of St. Patrick's Knights of Columbus Council 1994 and was a past district deputy of the 12th and 24th New Jersey Districts of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past faithful navigator of the Bishop Eustace General Assembly in Camden.

Mr. McGuinness, who was active in local sports, was a member of the Old Woodbury DeMolay soccer and basketball teams. He was a former sand-lot baseball umpire, a former member of the National Association of Approved Basketball Officials and president of the Babe Ruth League in 1963. He also was a former member of the Woodbury Country Club and the Woodbury Police Athletic League. Surviving are his wife, Ellen "Nellie" Dalton McGuinness; five sons, James and Liam of Woodbury, Michael and John of Woodbury Heights, and Walter of Sewell; a daughter, Suzanne Vadas Svell of Philadelphia; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Robert of Medford Lakes, William of Collingswood, James of Woodbury and Charles of San Diego, and a sister, Mary F.

Holt of Columbia, Pa. A viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter Woodbury. Mass will celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St.

By Tracey F. Stover Special 10 The Inquirer Michael Joseph McGuinness 80, a former Woodbury City Council president and secretary of the Woodbury Board of Education, died Tuesday at home. Mr. McGuinness served on the Woodbury council from 1958 to 1973, the last five years as president. In addition to serving as school-board secretary, he was an assistant county treasurer and court attendant for Gloucester County.

He also was a past president of the old Memorial Hospital and initiated the merger between Underwood and Memorial Hospitals. He was a lifetime honorary trustee of Underwood-Memorial Hospital, a former trustee of the United Fund of Gloucester County and a former member of the Juvenile Conference Committee of Woodbury. He worked as a Republican committeeman and was given the Woodbury Jaycee Dis-tinguised Service Award in 1962. Mr. McGuinness was born in 1907 in Derry City, County of Derry, in Northern Ireland, and had lived in Woodbury since 1915.

He worked for Mobil Oil in Paulsboro for 38 years as a statistician and schedule coordinator Until he retired in 1970. Before he worked for Mobil, he was a plasterer for the Robert McGonagle Co. of Philadelphia. He graduated from Camden Catholic High School and attended Drexel Institute. He graduated from Peirce Business School, where he specialized in administrative accounting.

He was a member and trustee of St. Patrick's Church in Woodbury and was a treasurer of the St. Vincent Deaths here Edwin Jacob Lutz, 78, president of a Fox Chase fuel business for nearly four decades, died Tuesday at the Cathedral Village retirement home in Roxborough. Mr, Lutz, a resident of Fox Chase for nearly 50 years, started with Joseph B. Mathers Inc.

in 1938, joining his father-in-law in the fuel yard, from which heating oil was sold. his father-in-law died three years later, Mr. Lutz became president of the business a job he took to heart. Mr. Lutz's wife, Mildred, recalled the many times he helped elderly pepple who had trouble with their heating systems.

"I had people, even five years after thg business closed, tell me that they missed him," she said. "He was very dependable, and he gave it a very pejsonal touch." Mr: Lutz was a Mason and a former member of Memorial Church of the Holy Nativity in Rockledge. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening. Survivors: his wife of SO years, Mildred Mathers Lutz; daughters, Janet Griegel and Ruth Feller; son, Edwin J. five grandsons, a sister and a brother.

Cannady, a native of Baltimore, had been a member of the Germantown Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the Council on International Visitors, the League of Women Voters and the YWCA. An avid reader most of her life, Mrs. Cannady served on many committees of the Friends' Free Library. She also volunteered for the Philadelphia School District, working at several schools, including Benjamin Franklin High School, where her husband, William was vice She was a resident for many years of the city's Mount Airy and German-town sections. An avid musician who once had a small band, he played the violin, saxophone and piano. He also enjoyed wine-making and raising flowers and vegetables. Born in Venafro, Italy, Mr. Scardino was a 60-year member of the Sons of Italy, Lodge 543 Ruggiero Bonghi, in Ambler. He also was a member of St.

Anthony's Church, Forrest Avenue and Hendricks Street, Ambler. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. Francis J. Warner, 90, a physician and a neuropathologist, died Tuesday at his home in Wyncote. An immigrant from Warsaw, Dr.

Warner spent the longest part of his career at Temple University, as an instructor in neurology from 1957 to 1975 and as an assistant professor during the following seven years. After Temple, he moved to University of Pennsylvania, where he worked briefly and was named emeritus associate professor of anatomy at the School of Veterinary Science. Dr. Warner had worked as an instructor and lecturer all over the country before coming to Philadelphia. He was an instructor at the University of Maryland and the University of Utah, and a research associate in neurology at the University of California.

A resident in neurology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit during the early 1950s, he also traveled to London to work as a guest investigator in neuropathology at the National Hospital. Dr. Warner earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, his master's in anatomy from University of Michigan and graduated from medical school at Loyola University. Dr. Warner was a diplomate in neuropathology with the American Board of pathology, a fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Anatomical Society of Great Britian and Ireland.

In a letter to Carlucci signed by 105 members of Congress, DioGuardi and Leland said the failure to award the Medal of Honor to the two men was an injustice. They said none of the 1.5 million blacks who served in the armed forces in the two wars had received the medal, although 549 such medals were awarded. The Army and Navy have opposed the medals to the two, arguing that the five-year statutory time limit for making the awards had run out.

The Army also said no personnel records for Johnson could be found, although other records noted that he had received the Croix de Guerre.
