On galleries i By Victoria Donohoe Inquirer Art Critic Marjorie Schick makes special-occasion jewelry with a sculptural approach. There's certainly no suggestion of a packaged product or mechanism about this work, and it's certainly not anything you'd wear to the grocery store. When an owner isn't sporting her Schick necklace, bracelet or brooch, she probably hangs it on the wall. Made from dowel sticks sold at lumber yards and discount stores, Schick's pieces of jewelry, on view at Helen Drutt Gallery, look like geometric ballets of painted wooden sticks. The idea and the form are paramount.

Her jewelry has always had a three-dimensional approach, but there's more directness about these pieces because they're made of wood rather than metal. A lot of sparkle comes from the witty gossip of variegated colors with which she paints them. Schick is an interesting case. Only occasionally does this contemporary jeweler, an Illinois native, leave the cherished seclusion of her craft classroom at a state university in Pittsburg, or her studio. When she does, you might find her serving as a guest lecturer at art schools in London or Oslo, having a one-person jewelry show at an art gallery in Amsterdam or visiting one of the presti- dissimilar, even though they both seem intent upon relieving images of their banality and their work has a self-contained integrity and openness of intent.

Hambleton's paintings have notable directness. This artist gives us nothing in the way of sugar-coating. Although she doesn't make her color per se attractive, she liberates it here and there, in ways that come naturally to paint. Some of her pictures seem to crackle or flicker, gently like heat lightning. Others are denser, darker, more eccentric in pattern and coloring.

Space in them tends to be shallow, compressed, anti-atmospheric. Is the mark she makes with the brush too large for the format? Perhaps. But that's her way of keeping us on edge about whether these strokes and the shapes they define will burst the bounds of her painting. It's from this technique that she derives her power. Delineating and modeling for her are painting devices.

Symbols are restrained, arrangements usually awkward-looking. The results: dryly exciting. In Ideal's work, color and structure seem to engender each other, and she favors a wayward kind of structure that's difficult to abstract, not a systematic kind. Her formats here most often relate to her feeling for gold-leafed altarpiece paintings in churches gious group exhibits of contemporary jewelry in whch she has participated. (She has been included in 14 such shows at 11 art museums in nine countries around the world since 1969.) Going hand in hand with the assurance and well-heeled lyricism of Schick's artistry, all abris-tle with its linear patterning and only occasionally tempered with a curve, is the deliberate compositional aim of buoyancy and lightness.

28. The painting show by Mary Hambleton and Phillis Ideal at Cava Gallery is a display of up-to-date abstract art with a precise intellectual tone and considerable grace. What makes the exhibit special is its involvement with a whole sector of present-day art, new abstract painting, that is generally ignored by commercial galleries. These two artists are really quite A bracelet of painted wood and rubber by Marjorie Schick in New Mexico. It is useful to imagine her own pictures being painted on gessoed and gilded wooden surfaces something suggested by the series title "Re-tablos" and to think of them as a kind of abstract retable.

Shapes in' them are folded or bent to provide an allusion to the third dimension. These paintings are airily colored with drifts of color, so that a weightless but thinly layered atmospheric space is evoked. There is much effective use of putty grays, soft light blues, dusty salmons, pinks and mauves, relieved by touches of black. The best of them combine a certain thick surface agitation and relatively simple design with large, slowly shifting areas of color. Cava Gallery, 1636 Walnut 732-5188.

Like his earlier novel, Family Business is about three guys in search of the Big Score. Whether they succeed is secondary to the characters' real objective living on the edge and having a good time doing it The protagonists are all members of the McMullen clan: Jesse, son Vito and grandson Adam. They are truly a family of thieves, though Vito is doing all that he can to keep Adam out of the "family business." The novel's tension comes from the tug-of-war between Jesse and Vito. Jesse wants Adam to join the family business, Vito wants his son to become a legitimate businessman. But when Adam himself suggests a sure-fire burglary, Vito reluctantly agrees to join his son and his father.

If the three can steal some biological experiments from a San Jose genetics firm, they'll get $1 million and be set for life. There's not much chance these guys ever will be set for life, but it's fun to watch them. The novelist, who claims to have been a door-to-door Bible salesman, a restaurant owner and a teacher, clearly does not hold "normal" jobs in high esteem. When Vito begs Jesse to allow Adam to lead a life free of crime, Jesse tells him that most straight jobs are "life sentences." The novel prances along on this barroom philosophy until the moment when these three dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers show up in California ready to pull the Big Score. If you're not rooting for them at that point, you're probably serving a life sentence but don't know it.

Sculptures of the Cyclades evoke modern parallels Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art, one of the period's main attractions is its similarity to modern art. "Cycladic art is modern. People respond to it immediately; it doesn't make them tired," she said, in the marble-and-glass-fronted museum the only Cycladic art musuem in the world built in central Athens to house the collection of more than 200 objects. Goulandris, widow of shipping magnate Nicholas Goulandris, to whom the museum is dedicated, began collecting Cycladic art objects 25 years ago, partly out of personal interest and partly to prevent them from being sold abroad. "For me, Cycladic art, which was neglected by scholars until fairly recently, is a passion," she said.

The striking similarity between Cycladic and modern sculpture is emphasized on the museum's third floor, where photographs of works by Modigliani, Moore and Picasso are put side by side with almost identical Cycladic works. The 17 Cyclades, in the central Aegean, grew prosperous between 3200 and 2000 B.C. by exporting locally mined copper and bronze. They were eclipsed at the end of the millennium by the rise of Minoan Crete. Because no written documentation from the Cycladic period has survived, scholars can only speculate on the significance of the statues and figurines.

Most portray pregnant women, but there are also some warriors, hunters and musicians. Christos Doumas, archaeology professor at Athens University and an expert on the Cycladic period, thinks that some of the figurines could be fertility symbols or that they may have been gifts for the dead. "The Cycladic people seem to have been the first to invent a way of representing the divine in a human form," he said. Interest in Cycladic art began in the 1960s, and experts say they can now identify pieces molded by the same hand. One such sculptor, believed to be represented by three pieces in the collection, has been dubbed the "Goulandris master." The white marble statues form of a display of art from the Cyclades Islands, home of a Greek civilization that flourished between 3000 and 2000 B.C. The collection was shown in France, Japan, Belgium, the United States and Britain before being brought to its permanent home in Athens.
