Burial wiU be in Norton Cemetery School board looks to fill empty seat Ell-Saline spot has been open since death of Choate By MICHAEL STRAND Salina Journal BROOKVILLE EU-Saline School Board members decided Monday night to name a replacement for Theresa Choate at their November meeting, rather than leave her position vacant untU the spring elections. Choate, who died Sept. 20, represented an area in the northeast part of the district, roughly north of Armstrong Road and east of Powers Road. Though her seat for election this spring, Superintendent Jerry Minneman said the board could choose to appoint someone to the position temporarily Board member Geena Kejr said she favored appointing someone, because with only six board members, two being absent from a meeting would mean there wasn't the quorum needed to have a meeting. And board president Greg Scott said that since he wouldn't be seeking re-election, the few months of experience an appointee would gain assuming he or she was elected would be valuable.

The board plans to publish ari official notice of the vacancy in the Salina Journal and will accept applications for at least 15 days after that. The board will then interview applicants and appoint someone at its regular monthly meeting on Nov. 13, group The board also gave approval to the formation of a "student support group" sim- Uar to the nationally-known Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Three middle school students, Mariah Jones, Bailey Base and Cain Fouard, made a short presentation to the board on their plans, which include having monthly meetings at school, special events focusing on preventing alcohol, drug and tobacco use, and preventing school violence. The group also plans to seek donations from local businesses to pay for occasional guest speakers.

The group is being sponsored by teacher Lori Scuitte and Saline County Sheriff's deputy Sean Kochanowski, who is assigned to the school. In other business, the board: Agreed to renew the after-school activity bus for the winter sports season. This past summer, the board approved running the bus provided parents came together and paid for the extra cost. Approved purchase of a new 78-passenger bus with storage compartments from HiUsboro Ford for $96,962. Minneman explained that although the district had set aside only $85,000 for a new bus, he recommended buying it now anyway as come 2007, new mandated emission controls wiU add another $7,000 to $9,000 to the cost.
