Republicans in hot seat over role in Waco probe The Associated Press WASHINGTON House Republicans organizing hearings on the 1993 government raid on the Branch Davidians near Waco found themselves answering questions Thursday over the gun lobby's role in the probe. A few days before the hearings were to begin, the focus turned to an Associated Press story that Republicans used consultants hired by the National Rifle Association to examine weapons seized from the religious sect's compound after it burned to the ground April 19,1993. "It's now very clear that the National Rifle Association is paying for and writing the script of these White House spokesman Mike McCurry said of the Wednesday report.

"It's about time that the Congress started asking itself some very serious questions about who is paying for these hearings on Waco," McCurry said Thursday. "It is absolutely outrageous that the Republican majority in the House of Representatives is subcontracting legitimate congressional investigative work to the National Rifle Association." Retorted Tanya Metaksa, the NRA's chief lobbyist, "What's astonishing an administration that's refusing access to such evidence." The notion that the NRA is paying for a congressional hearing and running it is absurd," Metaksa said in a telephone interview. "We're conducting our own independent investigation." Four agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and six Branch Davidians were killed in an ATF-initiated raid against the Waco compound on Feb. 28,1993. An additional 81 Davidians, including leader David Koresh, died seven weeks later as fire consumed the compound after the FBI tried to force out the occupants with tear gas.

The government maintains the fire was set by those inside. The Clinton administration, which has expressed concern about the conduct of the hearings scheduled to start next Wednesday, faced a Friday morning deadline from the Republicans to torn over additional documents related to the Waco episode or be served with a subpoena. "We have reached an agreement with them on the documents that they have sought from us and we are almost finished complying with that document request," Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick told reporters. She said the Justice Department "surely will meet the deadline imposed by the committee for the production of those documents." On Capitol Hill, Rep. Bill Zeiiff, was pounded by reporters' questions on the NRA's role.

Zeiiff insisted he did not know the NRA was involved when his staff hired the consultants this spring. No one was seriously injured, officials said.

James Hunter of Humble said he had visited his brother in a Galveston hospital and was returning home when three slow cars in the highway's left lane switched lanes suddenly, causing the car in front of him to slam on its brakes. Hunter's Chevrolet Suburban hit the car in front of him, a blue Buick, and the car behind him hit Hunter's Suburban. As these three cars pulled to the side of the road, a blue Toyota hit the Buick. Passengers were still in the Buick. This collision left the Buick and Toyota in the middle of the highway.

Police diverted traffic to the feeder road at the Hughes Road exit up to FM 517. No citations had been issued at press time. 1-800-SHOP-USA -45 Exit DAILYNEWS June Harris, a longtime friend of Stewart and wife of retired state District Judge Ed Harris, also remembered Stewart as a flamboyant man who could not be forgotten. She remembered the white linen suits he wore in the summer with his white suede shoes and white straw hat. "He had that kind of a flair about him that many people don't have," she said. Harris knew Stewart's mother well and was at their home for dinner one night while Stewart was home from college. Another guest for dinner, she said, was one of Stewart's close friends from college, the former astronaut Pete Conrad.

"It's like The Great Gatsby, 5 she said. "It was kind of fun to be around Maco." Throughout his life, Stewart left this mark in many ways. He served as a Marine combat platoon leader in the Korean War. He was president of the Young Democrats of Texas and served one term in the state House of Representatives. He ran against A.R.

"Babe" Schwartz and lost for the state Senate. While a state representative, Stewart sponsored a bill that mandated neonatal testing for phenylketonuria, or PKU, a treatable but potentially disabling condition. He started the Maco Stewart Foundation, a philanthropy for education and social advancement. Stewart wrote "Sex, Money and God." He is reported to have handed it out to everyone he saw. Almost five years ago, Stewart received a heart transplant and became an advocate for organ donors.

But even while on anti-rejec-. tion medicine for his heart; transplant, Stewart ate enchiladas and drank beer with: Kirkpatrick while visiting. Galveston. Harris said Stewart knew everyone and everyone knew him. "He's one of those people," she said.
