Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, February 12, 1997 Section 5 5 Tempo 'Dante's Peak' unable to slow down 'Star Wars' charge Associated Press LOS ANGELES In the war of the blockbusters, volcano epic "Dante's Peak" set a box-office record for a February debut but was topped by the 20-year-old space adventure "Star Wars." "Dante's Peak" sold $18.5 million in weekend tickets; "Star Wars" grossed $24.3 million to remain No. 1 in its second week of reissue. The Universal Pictures volcano movie bested the $18.1 million earned by "Wayne's World" over the 1992 four-day Presidents' Day weekend. But "Dante's Peak" failed to open as spectacularly as another disaster movie, "Twister," which grossed $41 million in its debut last May -r a more traditional time of year for big-budget action films. The appeal of "Star Wars" is a) M MJI? v; full m7fAZx 1 .... W:,,-: ' i rA', Fake blood covers the floor on the set of the recent Chicago "ER" shoot. Chicago Copier on Wilson Avenue was transformed into a convenience store for the episode. 'ER' ! Continued from Page 1 done partly because the elevated train is visible through the store's windows. "This is just a tie-in to the location with the interior and the exterior, which is good to do," he said. "Normally, you can't tie them both in together. Here, now, we have the opportunity." Hard as it may be to believe, getting away from the sun and warmth of Los Angeles for the gray, cold days of Chicago was perfect for Margulies, who was in virtually every shot "I'm so grateful that we were able to do the whole episode there because the episode was so intense, and the subject matter of the episode was so focused," Margulies, 28, said days later from her home in her native New York, where she was rehearsing for a movie. "Being away from home, and not having to go home and think about 'I've got to call the plumber ... it really helped. There were no distractions, which I really needed." "ER" executive producer Lydia Woodward said they come to Chicago, instead of staying in the Los Angeles area, because "I don't think you can deny the richness of the Chicago exteriors and the landscape ... we want to get that in as many episodes as we possibly can during the year." Added Margulies, who thinks the visit captured some of the best Chicago scene shots ever on "ER": "I think it's integral to the show. . . . When we're on the back lot outside at Warner Bros., it really feels like we're in Hollywood. And so being able to be outside in the freezing cold and feel the environment and bring that into the show, I think it's really important." Chicaso Copier was used for this episode because the location was right, even if the business wasn't, according to James Kle-kowski, who scouts locations for the show. "You had to sell Chicago, you had to be able to see Chicago," said Klekowski, 41. "Being this far north, you're not going to see downtown. So the best thing is always an L track." (Klekowski, who lives in Chicago, cleared up the great "ER" mystery of exactly where the fictional County General Memorial Hospital is supposed to be. Because the characters are always walking over the Michigan Avenue Bridge to either get to or from it, Klekowski said it's probably located somewhere between Clark and LaSalle Streets, even Z ' IT Box office unmistakable: With a total take of $393.5 million, it is poised to pass "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" ($399.8 million) as the all-time domestic box-office champion. Here are the weekend's top films according to Exhibitor Relations Inc., with the gross, the number of North American theater locations, the average gross, total gross and the number of weeks in release. Figures are based on actual returns and studio estimates. 1. "Star Wars," Fox, $24.3 million, 2,104 locations, $11,539 aver age, $70.8 million, two weeks (re- release). 2. "Dante's Peak," Universal, $18.5 million, 2,657 locations, $6,955 average, $185 million, one week. 3. "The Beautician and the Beast," Paramount, $4.1 million, 1,801 locations, $2,266 average, $4.1 Tnbune photo by Charles Osgood ' though it's "set" on the West Side of the city, as a model of Cook County Hospital.) Fans of "ER" are generally happy when the show comes to film. A waitress at a Mexican restaurant next door to Chicago Copier, however, wasn't too thrilled. "It hasn't been very good for us," she said, refusing to give her name. "Customers are complaining about it. They can't find parking. . . . They think we're closed. But I don't have nothing against the crew." Another fan was disappointed for another reason: "Oh, well, that figures," Pamela Auxier sighed when told George Clooney didn't travel to Chicago. "I looked for him, because the dressing rooms, they were set right on Raven-swood right in front of our windows there. I kept peeking out now and again."
