PEARL (nee Nemerafikvl. Josef Smit, 88. a former member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, died Monday at the Crofton Convalescent Center in Crofton, Md. A former resident of Philadelphia, he lived in Brigantine, N.J., and Claymont, before making his home in Annapolis, Md. Born in Paris, he came to this pountry as a teenager, settling in Philadelphia in 1914.

Considered a prodigy, he studied under Huns Kin-tiler, first cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and an internationally known artist who went on to found he National Symphony in Washing-Jon in 1933. Under Kindler's tutelage, the youth blossomed into an artist. Soon, he was installed us a full member of the orchestra, seuted in the section dominated by his teacher. His years with the cello led to broader musical interests. He became a founding member of the American Society of Ancient Instruments, which maintains its headquarters in Drexel Hill.

One of the instruments that captured his attention was the viola da gamba, an early stringed instrument of the viol family. Held and played in the style of the cello, it has a compu-ruble range. Mr. Smit became the viola da gamba soloist for the annual Bach Festi val in Bethlehem, Pa. In addition to his work as a performing artist, he composed and scored music.

He also wrote the scores for the Ice Capades for years, friends said. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge 449 and a member of the American Federation of Musicians locals in Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Surviving are his wife, Anna Louise Smit; a son, Maurice a daughter, Leana Graham; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at graveside at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Arlington Cemetery in Urexel Hill.

Morris Milgram is the head of the Fund lor an OPEN Society, a nonprofit mortgage fund founded with veteran civil rights leader James Farmer. The fund provides mortgages at below-market rates to white and minority home-buyers in integrated areas.

In the years alter their marriage, the couple lived in a home at the edge of Pennypack Park, in the Green belt Knoll development that he built. She joined in his efforts to foster integrated housing. Residential developments in Lorna Riggs Scheide Milgram, 74, a social activist who worked for prison reform in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, died Monday of cancer at the University Medical Center in Burlington, Vt. A former resident of Princeton, N.J., she lived in Newtown, Bucks County, and at Lake Dunmore in Vermont. The daughter of Francis Behn founder and headmaster of the Indian Mountain School, she was praised in Lakeville, Conn.

She went to graduate from Goddard College in Vermont and follow her interest I in liberal causes, particularly prison reform. Singer, 84, a retired Phil-adelphia-area pharmacist, died in Coconut Creek, Fla. A former resident of Center City, Oak Lane, Fern Rock, Mount Airy, and Margate, N.J., he lived in Coconut Creek. Born in Russia, he came to Philadelphia when he was 9 and graduated from Central High School in 1917 and Temple University School of Pharmacy in 1921. In the years that followed, he operated drugstores in Center City, Oak Lane, Roxborough, Fern Rock, Germantown and Mount Airy. He moved to Margate in 1958 and for 20 years managed drugstores in Atlantic City and nearby Pleasant-ville.

He retired to Florida in 1979. He was a member of B'nai B'rith, Equity Masonic Lodge 351, Beth Israel Synagogue of Pleasantville and Congregation Adath Jeshurun. Surviving are his wife, Esther Ber-man Singer; son, David daughter, Judith S. Cohen; six grandchildren, a great-grandchild, a brother and a sister. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m.

Keeler, 79, the first ejected chief of the Cherokee Nation or Oklahoma and retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Phillips Petroleum died Monday at a nursing home in Bartlesville, Okla. He was named principal chief of the Cherokees in 1949 and was reappointed by succeeding presidents until 1971. when the tribe began to elect shchief. He then was elected to a four-year term as chief. service on a variety of presidential commissions helped focus attention on Indian problems and led tp congressional action on beneficial programs.

'Mr. Keeler began his career with Hhillips in 1924 as a part-time employee in the engineering department.
