These unemployed guys already have self-image problems without the prospect of revealing their less-than-perfect bodies to a crowd of hooting women. Yet the movie suggests that one fear isn't that different from another; if Gaz and his cohorts are going to rebuild their lives, they'll have to put themselves on the line regardless. Still, stripping seems an unlikely pursuit for scrawny Gaz and his hefty friend Dave (Mark Addy).

Gaz is less interested in winning over his ex-wife, Mandy (Emily Woof), than his son, Nathan (played by 9-year-old William Snape). Assembling the show becomes a father-son bonding activity, which on the surface may seem perverse but makes more sense when you consider that removing your clothes while grooving to disco music is a juvenile thing to do. At any rate, Nathan, the movie's straight man, isn't appalled that his dad and friends are going to strip; he's appalled by their dancing, which is at the level of "The Super Bowl Shuffle." You haven't witnessed true misery till you've seen an embarrassed bloke trying to remove his rugby shirt to Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy The dancers, an assortment of physical types but not stereotypes, are assembled like Dorothy's entourage in "The Wizard of include their ex-foreman Gerald (Tom Wilkinson), who overrides his preference for ballroom dancing as his financial situation becomes desperate; Lomper (Steve Huison), a delicate redhead introduced when Dave advertently helps him attempt suicide; Horse (Paul Barber), a middle-aged black man who performs rickety James Brown moves to Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1,000 and Guy (Hugo Speer), the troupe's most physically gifted member. The humor is deadpan throughout, from the opening in which Gaz is trapped atop a submerged car with a stolen steel girder to the ex-steelwork-ers' renting "Flashdance" for inspiration a welder, isn't to their standing in the welfare line grinding their hips to Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." The movie hits a few false notes: The joys of shoplifting are celebrated a bit too enthusiastically, and a scene in which a job interview is sabotaged through the use of lawn dwarfs (cinema's new favorite accessory) comes off as more mean than mischievous. Otherwise, "The Full Monty" the title is slang for taking it all off works because you really root for these guys.

At the center is Gaz, the ringleader who's not quite sure he wants to bare all either. Carlyle's performance is especially enjoyable for anyone who saw "Trainspotting" and wouldn't have thought that the man who played the terrifying alcoholic psycho Begbie could be this vulnerably likable. The supporting cast also is uniformly strong. Like its protagonists, "The Full Monty" aims to put on a diverting show full of laughs and it delivers the goods.
