SW Chicago Tribune, Sunday, August 31, 1997 Section 4 5 Superintendent suspended over joke Lemont school district considers more disciplinary action Richard J. Byrd 17, resolute Wheeling student I REGIONAL OBITUARIES them survived. They are Ralph Vigneron and Sean Hansen, both Wheeling High School students. Mr. Byrd, a Wheeling High senior, was planning to turn his love of writing into a career.

He discussed applying to Chicago's Columbia College to study creative writing. He and Mr. Sadoff were good friends and even landed summer jobs together at a Wheeling Jiffy Lube. Many times, Mr. Byrd would put outings with friends on hold to attend church every Sunday, Gail Byrd said.

She said he had a love for music and did well in school. Other survivors include his father, Richard a grandmother, Estelle Gorny; and a sister, Julie Tucker. By Annemarie Mannion Special to the Tribune Members of a southwest suburban school board were not laughing Saturday when they voted during a special meeting to suspend with pay the superintendent for an off-color joke he made last week before a group of teachers. The suspension of Thomas Reiter, superintendent of Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113, was approved in a 6-0 vote. It will tajte place from Tuesday through Sept.

8. After deliberating in closed session for nearly five hours, the school board also voted to continue the meeting Sept. 8 at which time Reiter could face more discipline. Following the meeting, Reiter, who has been employed by the district for 16 years, said: "I'd rather not talk. I'm too hurt." About 50 parents also gathered at the Old Quarry Middle School to convey their outrage at the joke Reiter acknowledges he made.

the Old Quarry Middle School. The school opened last week. After touring the new school, she said, "I was feeling so proud. I was so excited. But after reading in the newspaper about the joke, my pride was gone in 30 seconds.

I thought, 'We in District 113 are a Although they did not specify the action that the board should take, the teachers union Saturday also called on the board to discipline Reiter. "Overwhelmingly, the teachers were upset over this, and overwhelmingly they want something done," said Bill Kerins, vice president of the teachers union. Reiter, who earns $96,000 a year, is in the first year of a three-year contract. This is not the first time that Reiter's term has been controversial. A couple of years ago, some parents had called for his ouster because they blamed him for construction problems they said had delayed the opening of a new middle school.

During a staff meeting early last week, Reiter held up a box of penis-shaped pasta to a group of approximately 120 teachers. None of the school board members would discuss the action they took Saturday. They did not say who, if anyone, will act as superintendent during Reiter's absence. "All I can say," said board member Carlene Wesolowski, "is stay tuned." Reiter wrote a letter to staff this week apologizing for the incident. He said he had showed the pasta as a way to lighten the start of a difficult school year.

But the letter and the suspension apparently were not enough to quell the concerns of some parents. "A suspension is no punishment," said Ray Klich of Lemont. "It's free time. He's not held accountable." Another parent, Diane Vrbancic of Lemont, said Reiter's joke and the ensuing controversy has cast a pall over the start of the school year and over the inauguration of 17; dreamed of GRAVESIDE AND SYNAGOGUE SERVICES NOBODY DOES IT FOR LESS!
