invasion of his country. Town School of Folk Music. Though his own recordings were far from best-sellers, several of Mr. Van Zandt's songs became top hits for other artists. In the 1980s, Mr.

Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" was a top country single for the duo of Emmylou Harris and Don Williams, and Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard later topped the country music chart with Mr. Van Zandt's "Poncho and Lefty." More recently, artists such as Steve Earle, Hal Ketchum, Robert Earl Keen, the Cowboy Junkies and Rodney Crowell had cited Mr. Van Zandt as a musical influence. Though Mr. Van Zandt turned out a handful of humorously high-spirited talking blues on such topics as Thunderbird wine and fraternity hijinks, he was far better known for lyrically plumbing the depths of despair.

In interviews, the singer candidly acknowledged his struggles over the years with depression, drugs and alcohol He was fond of telling interviewers that half of his fan mail Townes Van Zandt came "from people in mental institutions" who found solace in his songs. "I dont know why I write really depressing songs," Mr. Van Zandt told the Tribune in an interview in the early 1990s. "I'm a kind of melancholy guy, I suppose.
