12-B SATURDAY, MAY 27, 1995 GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS SMU to begin new Houston-Galveston seminary in August DALLAS Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology will begin a new Houston-Galveston seminary program in August. The program was designed in partnership with leaders in the United Methodist Church in the Houston area in order to meet the growing demand for seminary education. Houston is one of the largest major metropolitan areas without a permanent, fully-accredit- ed Protestant seminary. The program will offer opportunities for beginning study toward the Master of Divinity, Master of Religious Education and Master of Theological Studies degrees. Two courses will be taught each semester during the 199596 and 1996-97 school years.

Classes will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston and Moody Memorial First United Methodist Churrh in Galveston. All classes will be taught by Perkins faculty. "One of the positive aspects is that students enrolling here will be full Perkins students," said the Rev. Earl Bledsoe, pastor of Cypress United Methodist Church.

"I look forward to that relationship and even to the development of a full course of study here at Perkins As chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry, I appreciate the bold lead- ership that Perkins has taken in helping to shape the future rather than letting the future shape it," he said. Support services for students will include orientation, faculty advising and registration. Worship services and some community life events will be offered. This program is a godsend for those going into the ministry as a second career who can't drop everything to go live in Dal- las for three years," said Sam Duree, superintendent of the Houston Northwest District and dean of the cabinet of the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. "If also ideal for those who are already serving as local pastors and want to continue their ministerial role while working toward their master's degree," he added.

Perkins' Houston-Galveston program is open not only to those preparing for ministry, but also to those seeking a theological education for their personal growth. Anyone interested in finding out more about the program is invited to an introductory session with Perkins faculty members and recent graduates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 17 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer.
