SYRACUSE, N. Nov. 10. Syracuse played superb football for one period in today's game with Bucknelr Northeast High School triumphed over West Philadelphia High yesterday- in. the last two minutes of a bitterly 'fought' game by the score of 3 to 0.

Carter, the husky half back of the Archives, kicked Special to The Inquirer. WILMINGTON, Nov. 10. It wag all even at the finish of the four-ball best-ball match between Wilfred Reid and Fred McLeod and J. M.

Barnes and Eddie Loos for the benefit of the Soldiers' Tobacco Fund at the Wilmington Country Club today. There was not a very big crowd attendance in the morning, but in the afternoon several hundred spectators turned out and a considerable sum was 'collected. The match, taking it all round, waa an exceedingly interesting one. but it cannot be said that any one of the four players was in his best form In the morning round a very stiff wind was blowing and it bothered the players considerably-, but in tbe afternoon it died away and -the conditions were ideal. The match was remarkable for the poor putting of all the players at times, now and then it was almost ludicrous.

It can scarcely be blamed on the greens, for they were excellent condition, although a little keen. Taking it all round the play was just steady and, although few remarkable shots were pulled off, thrillers were few and far between. Reid and Barnes played the best golf of the four and McLeod was decidedly better than Loos, who had an oft day. Barnes League game at Fifty-third and Walnut streets, yesterday afternoon, score 2-2. Wanderers had the better of the play.

Wilson started the scoring in the first half on an easy goal. This was the extent of the scoring in this half and after the teams crossed over, it was not long before Finnegan shot a fine goal for the centre of the penalty area, having Pearce well beaten. The Wanderers then ''let up," and taking advantage of this the bt. Carthage eleven (came to the iront and in the last ten minutes scored their two tallies through the efforts of Flynn and Baird. wanderers.

Never before has the up-Staters appeared so thoroughly beaten as they were yesterday, for in almost every department of the game the Saw Makers had the edge on the champions. Ferguson, the clever little left full-back, being the only player who seemed able to cope with the strong rushes of the Distons forwards. In marked, contrast to some of their previous displays this season Disstons worked together with clok-like precision, every player doing his share in helping down the strong Bethlehemites, for the first time this season. With the inclusion of "Connie" Lynch and Johnny Small in the front fine, and "Dick" Spaulding and Harry Pearce in the defense, this balanced the team, for the rest of the players went about their work with a will and seldom let up the thrilling pace.

0 What practically demoralized the Bethlehem team was the inability of their half-back line to cope with the Disstons attack. Instead of the Bethlehem middle line "potting" the ball to Fleming and company, which has usually been the fase, it was a case of the half-backs having all their work cut out and then some preventing the fleet-footed Disstons front liners from constantly bombarding their citadel. Lynch and his conferees always eeemed on the ball. Besides displaying clever team -work they also exhibited enough dash to worry the Bethlehem's defense, and in con frequence the latter was kept going without having much chance to start their passing machinery in motion. The whole Disstons team gave a good account of itself.

There wa not a weak player on the eleven, though the two fun-backs and the half-back line deserve more credit than the rest for the efficient manner in which they held down the opposing forward line besides keeping Lynch and the rest of the lorwards in action. Matthews, who formerly played with Bethlehem, appeared to have a "lien" on Fleming, for the later was not as conspicuous as is usually the case, Matthews keeping "Whitey too well covered, which was one of the main reasons why Disstons got away with such an easy victory. One of the best goals witnessed for some time was the rirst goal tallied by Disstons about minutes prior to the interval. Disstons were awarded a free kick charging about six yard from the coal line. Andrews took the kick.

Had Bucknell started is fighting drive at the start of the game instead of waiting until the second quarter the score would have been nowhere near "the 42 and that marked the final whistle. Bucknell did not present its strongest front, six veterans, Hall, Morrison, Spotts, Elliott, Lewis and Gerhardt, being on the bench at the first kick-off. Several "of the stars who were being held for the Bucknell-Gettvsburg battle next Saturday were hurried into the lineup in the second quarter. Bucknell threatened thrice during the combat. The most serious moment for the Orange rooters came in the third period when Smith scooped up a fumble and raced sixty yards before he was smothered ten yards from the goal by three Orange tacklers.

Brandt, of thrown for a loss on the next play and after an attempt to sift a runner off the tackle, Waddell called for a pass that grounded over the goal line for a touchdown. On two other occasions Bucknell tried the same play and each time lost the ball when the receiver was guarded so closely he had not 'the slightest chance to accept the throw. Bucknell improved steadily as the game progressed and in the final quarter was playing Syracuse to a standstill, although many of the Orange reserves had replaced the 'Varsity men in the period. made its first touchdown six plays after Finsterwald received the first- kick. Flannery, who replaced Bar-s'aa, stepped around the ends for fifteen yards and the first score.

Meehan kicked the goal. Bucknell took the next; kick completed a four-yard pass and punted. J.Jatt Brown received the kick and came back 3o yards. Finsterwald drove off takle to the 11-yard line and M. Brown went over on the next play.

'Leehan kicked the goal. Chick Meehan scored the third touch-qpwn Avhen he took the ball near midfield and raced behind a flying line interference to the goal line. He kicked his own goal. Straight scored the final counter of the period, the Orange marching steadily down the field until Finsterwald went over. Meehan kicked the goal.

braced in tie second period aside from a successful forward lass, a delayed pass around left end and a flying line attack that brought a score, the Orange went without a touchdown. Mee han kicked tins goal. Bucknell held safely until late in the third period when Matt Brown broke loose after an off -tackle plunge, skirted the secondary defense and raced thirty yards for a touchdown. Meehan kicked the goal. The quarter ended at the next kick-off and Buck O'Neill sent in his reserves.

Head linesman Lisserraaru Time at aTiArtr--Ti a field goal from the thirty-five yard mark, thus defeating the West Philadel-phians and causing Northeast, Central, West Philadelphia to tie for the lead in the race for the Gimbel Cup.

The game, from the kickofr to the final whistle, was replete with spectacular runs and hard tackles by both teams. Sammy Friedman, the elusive half-back of the Westerners, was the star of the game. His work on both defense and offense was the best seen on a scholastic gridiron since the days of Howard Berry. His work in yesterday's game stamps him as the premier scholastic back of the season. On his fierce rushes through the line and his slashing off tackle dashes, it took three or four Archives to stop him.

Both teams passed up several chances to score. At the opening of the second period, Carter missed an easy chance at goal from the fifteen-yard line. Again in the fourth period, Carter narrowly missed chance to score from the thirty-five- yard line. Soon after, however, the. heavy rsortheast backs carried the ball back to the same spot and he lifted it over the cross bars.

Up until the last part of the last period the Speedboys outplayed their heavier rivals. In the third period Grossman ran back one of Carter's punts twenty-five yards. On the next play Friedman hit centre on an open formation for twenty yards more. This put the ball on Northeast's fifteen-vard line, where Griffith fell on Grossman fumble. Northeast- was held and Friedman caught Carter's punt and dashed up the side line forty yards to Northeast's ten-yard mark.

Here Grossman attempted two forward passes and was nailed each time before he could get rid of the ball Then Friedman dropped back and failed to kick a goal from the field from the forty-yard line. Again in the final quarter the Westerners worked the ball down the field only to lose it by faihire to execute the forward pass successfully. On these plays the entire Northeast line broke through and smothered Grossman before he could heave the ball. The fast weakening West Philadelphia backs lacked the punch to score and it was easily seen that a fairly srood substitute- would have torn the Northeast team to pieces. No substitutes came to the rescue, however, so the Westerners failed to score.

The big crowd cheered this bit of heady ork to the echo. It hail hard'y subsided, however, liefore the hall was again worked to within ng dis-j tance through the efforts of Lynch audi fiarrett, for Small to have an open goal I from Lynch's pass, but Johnny booted clean over the bar one minut before' half-time. With Dilstwns having had alLthe better oi the play in the opening period it was the impression that Bethieliem wo'ild take the initiative in the second; as one goal lead at tht interval was i not any too much leeway with the sun against Disstons. But such proved' to the contrary, for the Sawmakers asstira-; ed the aggressive in the second stanza. Flay had only been in in thio session twelve minutes Barrett -rushed Fletcher oif the ball and then whijied to Lynch, who tallied Disstons second goal.

This point came so suddenly after Bethlehem had been bombarding the goal that many of the spec tators Loudly realized what had happened as the bull had been carried neaiiy the length of the field before Lynch fastened his boot for the final shot. At this juncture the crowd began to realize that Disstons superiority in the first hall" was no hash in the pan, for they were all over the Bethlehem defense. The uptaters, however, going better a little later and -might have scored it Aleclv had not blocked Pepper just its the latter was about to shoot, Pearce making the mistake being caught in two minds. McLaughlin eventually clearing the ball out of danger. The third goal was scored aiter twenty-tive minutes play, Andrews jus.

having" to tip the ball past Duncan aftei Small and Lynch had dribbled the sphere into a favorable position. After the restart Disstons apparently eased up, for. the American Cup champions had more of the game, the halfbacks feeding the front liners with the result that Eapton scored a brilliant goal. This point, was well worked, for the Disstons defense not having much chance to stop the passing movement, Pearco being well beater, with the shot. Disstons then played a "killing" game with a two-goal lead, which was the proper move to adopt, especially as the players wei'e none too fresh after such a fast pace.

Bethlehem was dangerously close to time, but as Spaulding, McLaughlin and Pearce played the game safe the Upstaters never looked iike adding to their score. Despite the fact that there has always been a great deal of rivalry between these teams because of so many former Disston players- in the eBthlehem lineup there was not any unnecessary roughness, Referee Waklers having the game well in hand-from the start, while none of the players tried to "rough" it because of tJvfe fact that Walders followed everv movement of the ball Oisstous Tearce McLauchlin Spaulding Matthews Fisher Wilson Andrews Ilyslop Lyncli Hrnall Barrett Final scon Positions Bethlehem Duncan Fletcher (MeOelvey Ferguson Murrav Campbell Klrktn trick McKelvey (Fletoter) orrest Fasten IVnnc" Goal Right full-back Left full-back Right half-hnek Centre Left half-back Outside right Inside right Centre forward Inside left Outside left FlemrninJ -Disstons. 3: Bethlehem. 1.
