8-B FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1995 GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS ENTEFOAENMENT Laughs by the minute in CCCT's 'Man by Nine' By ROBERT W. KUNCE Correspondent KEMAH Without trying to clone a Neil Simon comedy, Southeast Texas playwright Eon Reahard has demonstrated that he has a lot of the best attributes of that great writer without some of the baggage. His "A Man by Nine" at Clear Creek Country Theatre is a delightful, frothy comedy with witty lines, a good comedic pace, and a topical yet delicate subject. The subject? Artificial insemination. Tb his credit, the young writer is able to present the subject with no blushing, just lots of fun.

The lead character is Leslie, an attractive yet hard-nosed editor for Texas Woman magazine. Leslie has decided she wants a child, but not a husband, and publicizes this choice in her magazine editorial. She won't stand for roadblocks in her career, she says. Gay Ahlers plays Leslie most believabiy and sets the tone for the entire cast to follow. CCCT veteran Danielle Dupuis returns to the stage after a 30-year hiatus to play Dorothy, mother of the editor and a formidable roadblock in her daughter's life.

Dorothy has been looking for a husband for her daughter for quite some time it appears, and is aghast at the thought of her daughter becoming pregnant without the appropriate husband and marriage. The quick-witted repartee between the two ladies is rapid- fire comedy right from the very beginning. In a pivotal scene, Dorothy gets down on her knees and in an impassioned prayer asks for Divine help in finding her daughter a husband by 9 a.m. the following day. The Review "A MAN BY NINE" WHAT: A career woman who wants a baby sets a deadline for finding a husband.

Later in the evening, the building cleaning lady, Rosie, appears to clean the office. Rosie is nicely played in her stage debut by Alice Walker, but the part can hardly compete with the other four actors whose lines are quite hilarious.

The next morning as 9 a.m. draws near, an attractive copy machine repairman appears at Leslie's office much to the chagrin of her mother who thinks he is the wealthy dentist she solicited the day before. Also on the scene is a lecherous temp secretary played with abandon and no redeeming social graces by Shannon Tyrell thank goodness! The repairman is played by a most ingratiating actor, Wayne Rowe, and his sword is sharp as he fends off the put-downs BROADWAY AT 52nd 744-4550 Candpanll 53 7 25 (R) 9:25 VW OPEN EVERY DAY I FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH DINNER 11619 8801SL-782-1117 Brady Bunch (KM3) 8:25 (MOO ALL DAY' U.KUI.U.M1II SS The Shortest Route to Las Vegas Action Cajun Style GRAND CASINO COUSHATTA Friday, March 31st Thursday, April 6th Entertainment FREE Admission Drinks it Casino Reserve Your Seat NOW! Besides the talented author, the director, Bryan Bounds, is to be complimented for keeping everything neatly "within Bounds." He has shown a lot of talent on the stage this past year, but this was his directorial debut and hopefully not his last.

All was relatively smooth on opening weekend with a full house at the sometimes problem-plagued theater. But they are to be held accountable for holding the production 19 min- utes while a small group of persons with reservations finished their dinner at a nearby restaurant. The other 40 or so persons in the small venue ate their dinner in a more timely manner and were off-put by the unwarranted delay. Another note: Perhaps it is time to begin practicing the Japanese theater method of collecting all pagers in the lobby before the show. When the man on the aisle could not locate his noisy pager, I thought for a moment he was part of a gag in the office-related comedy.

While the adult subject matter may offend some people, for the rest of us "A Man by Nine" is one mighty good play. 629 5th Ave.
