The Union Temperance service in Academy hall Sunday evening, under the auspices of the Young Womans Christian Temperance Union, was an enjoyable occasion. The young ladies of the society with Mrs. Read, their state president, and the local pastors lacing an audience of three hundred people, made a pleasing and telling picture, as snowing the active interest of theclergy and voung people in the temperance work and the willingness of the large part of the people to help on the work.

The Scripture lesson was read by Rev. F. F. Lewis. Prayer was offered by Rev.

Mr. Smithers. Miss Grace Brush presided at the piano giving several fine selections. Solos were rendered by Misses Clara DeFord and Kate Mack; two trios by Misses Carrie Drew, Kate DeFord and Clara DeFord. A temperance selection was given by Miss Theda Wheeler.

Mrs. Read was introduced by Mr. Lewis. Her address was a strong and forcible plea to the young men and women, urging upon them the importance of a clean, pure life. The POPULAR DELUSIONS.

People thought when they were coming to the pest office that a cyclone had been there and blown down two old buildings for the postmaster, but on inquiring found that Rickaby had visited the place and demolished them in good shape. The experiment made by Postmaster Dexter in mowing his oats a short time ago proved quite successful, for they are actually beginning to head now and look most gratelul for the recent rain.

From Littleton he moved to St. Johnsbury and occupied a store there for one year, thence he went to Barton and from there to this town in 1821. He immediately started in business and long and successfully carried on trade in what is now the Dwinnell block. He had held nearly all the offices of honor and trust in the gift or the town, and in 1845 and 46 served the county two terms in the state senate.
