According to different reports there were twelve or fifteen in the gang. The (rain had just passed through Rockingham when the engineer saw a red lantern on the track and brought bis train to a stop. Am he slowed down two robbers sprang on the footboard of the engine and covered him and the fireman with revolvers. While the engine crew was thus kept quiet others of the gang menaced the crew and passengers in the coaches. One of the bandits uncoupled the express and baggage ears from the rest of the train and then the engineer was ordered to pull out.

ju. any of the women captured lnursoa night's raid had been recently imported from Europe. Mr. Rodgers' interviews with the prisoners were not wholly satis-factorv. Most of the women swore positively thit they were either born here or had been in this country for years.

One girl was tripped into an admission that may lead to her deportation. The case is now under investigation. "While we make every effort to prevent the importation of women for this traffic, it is possible that in a large port of entry like New York some of them might slip through," said the Commissioner. "'In many cases the women are told in advance just what to say to the inspectors when they reach port. This makes detection more dilficult.

If I find anything here to warrant me in doing so, I will report the matter to Washington. Up to date I have nothing to report." Many of the men who the police say were ringleaders in the vice syndicate, have been released on bail. The women were less fortunate, and most of them have been taken to Moyamensing Prison. While the detectives assert that they will be able to point positively to the ringleaders in the nefarious trade, they are giving nj hint as to the nature of their evidence. District Attorney Weaver will take hold of the case on Monday.

Hearths Closed by Lack of Coal Five hearths at the ilidvale Steel Works have been shut down owing, it is stated, to the scarcity of soft coal caused by the freight blockade at Pittsburg, and, as a consequence, several hundred men employed on the day and night shifts are idle.
