FOR SHOPPING I PURPOSE With all the talk in congress and elsewhere there is little probability of intervention in Mexico. President Wilson is not nn ideulist or a (H-nce-el -any -price udvocute, but lie recognizes in the situation in Mexico a great moral question and he lias shown that be will not hesitate to stand by that he believes to be right. GET OUT AND VOTE TOMORROW It 1 imparativ that every qualified elector of Luna county, and of Iteming especially, take the time early tomorrow morning to cast his or HER vote in favor of tbe establishment of the Luna County High School at Iteming. Tbia means that every woman wboee bueband is qualified ia also It will take every vote to earry tke issue. In a news story on another page, tbe dia-tinet advantages of tke county high school to Deming and Luna county baa been pointed With an added revenue of $7,900 tbia year and $10,000 next year Deming will see the erection of another modern school building devoted to agriculture and the meehuuic art located near the present palatial structure. Everyone knows that a city located iu the midst of an opulent agricultural region is ideal for rcaidence, and it is evident thut when such a city provides the best of educational facilities, in an all-American community of cultured and refined people, that it will become the meeea of the most desirable citizens in tbe land.

We now have the highest salaried teachers and most pretentious buildings of any city iu the stute and it will be but a few years before a full-fledged university will come into being. We are all Anglo-Americans and have come from the most progressive communities of (lie West, Kust, South and North. We believe in education uud are not given to grumbling when support for educational institutions is asked. The first step toward a greater educational institution here is to get out and vote tomorrow for the establishment of the Luna county high school at Deming. It is reported that England intends to locate a naval base in the West Indies.

Other nations may follow suit and the armed forces of the United States may have their work cut out to defend the New World from encroachment from the old and the consequent breaking of (lie Monroe doctrine. President Wilson fooled them again when he accepted the resignation of Ambassador Wilson, The executive is a pretty good secretary of state when he gets his hand in. CO-OPERATIVE COMMERCIAL CLUBS Tbe Co-Operative Commercial Clubs of Eastern New Metieo and Texas, representing nearly one hundred towns and cities of the two states will hold their Crst annual convention at Tucuui-cari, August 4, reports already indicate that the Convention will he largely attended from Texas and Eastern New Mexico News Item. The enthusiasm of the united commercial clubs of the cities of Eastern New Mexico and Northern West Texas will go far towards making the organization a success. Such au organization is a real necessity in Southern New Mexico and Western Texas.

Freight rates, community advertising for settlers and a general exchunge of ideas on local betterment along many lines could be discussed and effective united action taken. The cities of El Paso, Deming, Las Cruces, Silver City, Socorro, Hillsboro and others could profitably unite. These cities hnve much in common and very little in competition and, if the petty jealousies could be sunk for the mutual benefit of all, great good would result. If the places mentioned failed to co-operate properly the lines could be drawn closer to include only the cities of Grant and Luna counties. It is certain that Lordsburg, Silver City and Deming could work together in harmony because there is no conflicting interests involved.

Deming is bent on developing its farms and taking advantage of its great railroad facilities; Silver City wishes patients for its sanatoria and capital to develop its mining resources; Lordsburg is endeavoring to develop both its mining and agricultural possibilities. Truly these are days of combinations, great and small, and since all three cities have flourishing commercial clubs there is no reason why success should not attend a greater commercial organization. The two El Paso newspaMrs are working overtime ereutiug latest" Mexican scares. If American dollars arc invested with ull the rights of human beings then there is cutisc for alarm. But is the sound unpleasant? Devil a bit, It is the sweetest of music to Mimbres Valley ears the song of the irrigation engine which toils early and late to raise the silver stream of 99.99 pure from the underground reservoir to the green alfalfa fields of the farmers. Every explosion is punctuated with a dollar mark and it is doubtful if a real Deming booster can go to bed at this season and sleep peacefully without the lulling symphony to whose rytbem the epic of a new is being written a creation more fuir peopled with beings more lovable and wise than inspired the divine genius of Ilomer to deathless melody. The iron sinews of the engine arc stronger than those of Hercules, its gaseous breath more potent than that of Aoleus, its persistance beyond the endurance of Prometheus, its- dexterity greater than that of Chiron, its riches beyond the dreams of Midas, its thunder more dreadful than the bolts of Zeus and its song sweeter by far than the charmed music of Orpheus. Indeed, the Elysian fields are no more inviting than the garden which the engine waters and the homes of the blessed are no happier than those within the charmed valley in which grow the golden apples of commerce, the pastures of the sacred dairy cows, the grains beloved of Ceres and the grapes dear to the heart of Bacchus. Great is the irrigation engine! Great is the irrigation engine of the Mimbres Valley! A year ago tbe prosfierity of the Mimbres Valley was mostly in prospect.

Today we have tbe tangible evidence of it through tile operation of large development companies as well as through the feverish activity of individual developers. Another six months or less will see more large-scale development than the most ardent booster could have predicted in moments of rosiest reflections. The Graphic is the prophet of the new era and today it predicts greater things than ever before. Wait and see. Mr- lharles Heath and her A week ago it was reported that at least 300,000,000 bushels of corn was lost iu the corn belt of the middle west through the long continued drought.

FIRST STATE BANK Deming, New Mexico State and County Depository Capital Stock, 930,000 7 'V AN EDUCATION IN NEW MEXICO Brother Bush of, the Silver City Enterprise was somewhat peeved at the Graphic's editorial of July 25 in which the centralization of education was urged through consolidation of the educational institutions of New Mexico. We believe that if Brother Bush will re-read the article, carefully he will find that there is nothing said or implied which in any way reflects on the efficiency of the normal school located in Silver City.

We are inclined to believe that Silver City is tbe logical location for a normal for tbe southern part of the state, certainly we have not heard Deming teachers knocking on that institution. The fact is the ediorial referred rather to institutions of higher education and those devoted, supposedly, to industrial work. That such a strong institution is needed is proved by a news item which appeared in the Enterprise of the same issue as the criticism. It refers to the death of A. J.

Clark of this city and reads His family moved to Los Angeles several years ago to give the children a college education. As a comment on this we reprint the following from the editorial which the Independent, thought reflected on the local institution: The appropriations for education in the state must be small for many years to come, so why tie up tbe available funds in mountain villages in many instances off the railroads or at the end of remote branch lines? Lack of equipment and teachers of ability, and indeed lack of pupils, make the work of such schools of negative advantage. Why cant we have at least one first-class institution of learning and stop the exodus of youth from New Mexico to eastern and northern universities? The loss is not only educational, but economic, and means that many of i our brightest young men and women never return to the state which needs them so sorely and which offers them the greatest return for their endeavors. The money earned in the state and spent in eastern schools is a drain no our yet slender resources which can be stopped. Mr.

Clark has been in New Mexico over thirty years, was the father of ten children, none of whom, so far as is known, were educated in New Mexico. It is to be supposed that a New Mexico normal school in Silver City or Las Vegas eonld have supplied an adequate normal training, but it is certain that up to the present time New Mexico has had nothing in the way of a higher institution of learning above the high school. Deming is in no way jealous of Silver City. The far-sighted boosters of both cities (not mountain villages) realize that the interests of the two are in common. In the Graphic of this issue is a story of the great Gila country which is nearer to Silver City than to Deming.

In this issue too, is an editorial urging the commercial organizations of the cities of Southwestern New Mexico for aggressive team work.
