Penn's Tlay was disappointing even for an opening came, and was witnessed by only a few spectator? othef than the students in the checrlns section. The weather was warm and murky, and the West Virginians did no, seem to be in the best of physical condition. In the second half their team caved in and made eround gaining easy for Penn. In the first half Tenn was unable to gain through the line and two end runs of 15 yards each by Kienath were features of the play. On a touch-back the ball went to Carlisle from the visitors returned kick-off. The contest was the fastest seen in Carlisle In many years. Villanova's tricky plays puzzled th Indians somewhat, but brilliant end runs for the home team gave Carlisle some leeway. Nearly' the whole contest was played in the centre of the field. In the first half Balenti kicked a goal from the field from the 20-yard line, and Thorpe made a beautiful 35-yard run.

Near the end of the first half Villanova beld the ball for downs on their 2-yard line. Penalties were frequent and in the. usually attendant upon early football contests, one Villanova man and two Indians were retired for rough playing. The violations were technical ones, however. In the second half Libby was bumped across the line for a touchdown and Thorpe kicked a nice goal.

Following this were frequent penalties and mixed-up players in the centre of the gridiron. The left of the line seemed to bo Penn's weakest point, and had the visitors directed more of their play at left tackle they would likely have gained more ground. Later Siieltou tried the uuarter-back kick, but it was not successful, as Marks, who teemed to follow the ball better than any other man on Penn's team, fell on it on Penn's line. Keinath then broke loose with a fine run of 20 yards around Virginia's left, taking the ball to the 44-yard line. Two line smashes by Manier. who showed up in the game as a strong line backer, gained another first down.

Keinath again went arouud left end, this time for 1 yards, and Townsend went with a nash through the line, gaining 3 yards and a tirst down just as the whistle blew. On the next play Manier was forced over the line, but the ball was brought back to the 3-yard line and another smash was necessary to secure a touchdown. Scarlett kicked the goal. Coach Metzgar reproved the players for not working the forward pass more frequently.

Coach Lueder, of the West Virginia team, was very well satisfied with the outcome of the game. He claims that tlie Penn players were in much better condition than his men, owing to the fact that bis team has only been practicing since last September. 18th, while the Penn team has been out a much longer time. Mr. Leuder is an old Cornell man, having played for four years on the 'varsity football team at the tackle position.

Mr. Lueder attributes Penn's touchdown to the success of one forward pass only, and stated that in his estimation Hollenbach played the best game for Penn, being the hardest man to stop when riTnning with the ball. Diffendol, the West Virginia full-back, was the only one of the visitors to receive any se rious bruise. He was kicked in the back of the neck. "Mike" Murphy.

Middle Coaches Are Looking for Best Material ANNAPOLIS, Sept. 26 (Special). The special problem with which the coaches at the Naval Academy are dealing at present is tie development of both ends and a satisfactory arrangement of the backfield.
