Although the story has now been printed for several successive days, James Hazen Hyde, the wealthy American, has not deemed it necessary to make denial of the report that he is engaged to Mile. Yvonne Garrick, of the Comedie Francaise.

Whether it is true and Mr. Hyde has decided to allow the story to stand as it is, or whether, following his custom since coming to Paris, he refuses to comment on any personal matter, cannot be determined. It is altogether possible that the former reason is the one that induces his silence. At first the Figaro published a feeler to the effect that "a young actress of considerable talent is said to be engaged to marrv a rich American Avho is not vet Gills Tha! 8. The 'Michigan Central Kailwav was placed in a differential clhss bv itself yesterday, when Lucius Tuttle, 'president of the Boston and Alaine. as referee, rendered a decision in the rate controversy. By the terms of the decision the Michigan Central is permitted to charge a rate to Boston, New York and Buffalo, which is between the standard and the regular established differential rates. An exception is made in the case of the standard first-class rate to Boston.

Railroad men say there is grave question whether the railroads under the new-law have the right to arbitrate rate questions, but there is reason to believe that it will be observed, because each president gave his word to abide by before the matter went to Mr. Tuttle. The arbitrator decides that the rates which he has given the Michigan Cen-ti'al shall be applied by that road only over its eastern connection the New York Central.
