In a hard game this afternoon, in which Yale was outplayed in the first half, Yale defeated Syracuse by the to 0. The touchdown, which occurred about the middle of the second half, was due to a very lucky forward pass made by Hopkins, the Yale quarter-back, in desperation. Brown fell on the ball ten yards from the Syracuse goal line and Coy in two of his famous through-the-centre plunges. made the touchdown. Hobbs kicked the goal.

Brilliant plays characterized the game, as well as numerous fumbles on Yale's part. Especially good was a perfect forward pass of thirty yards from Horr. the Syracuse captain, to Burton, the Syracuse end, in the first half, and a 30-yard run by Kilpatrick. Yale's end rush. Another 30-yard run was made by Phil-bin, and Coy in the second half played as he did in last Tear's Princeton game.

But the best backfield man for consistent playing was Murphy. He carried the ball several times, but his principal work was defensive and his tackles were as sure and fearless 19 those of any lineman. Howard Jones, who formerly played on a Yale team, brother of Tad, is coach of Syracuse Special to The Inquirer. PRINCETON, Oct. 3.

The Springfield Training School turned out to be an easier victim for the Tigers than was anticipated. The score was lS-O. Princeton started Id with a rush. Read running the kick-off back 30 yards. Pfeiffer and Read then proceeded to make good gains around the ends, but a fumble lost the ball.

Indeed, fumbling and ragged play marred the game to- a great extent. Springfield was unable to gain consistently and punted. A series of mass plays scored the Tigers' first touchdown. McCrohan carrying the ball over. Waller kicked the goal.

Score 6-0. Read made the second tally not Ions afterward, but Waller failed to kick the coal. Score, ll-O. From this time on sub after rub was Bent out from the side lines, for Coach Roper's plan was to try out a large number cf men. The second half found an entirely new Tiger eleven on the field.

Both sides resorted free'y to punting, on-siae kicks and forward passes, but the latter were miserably executed. When Read and Pfeiffer went out Princeton still found excellent ground gainers in Cunningham and Bishop. Springfield at length held for downs on their 40-yard line. When Princeton punted. Winters caught the ball, but was shoved back for a safety.

Score. 13-0. Carlburg made the final touchdown. Score 18-0. The line-up: Princeton.

Ppm scored all her points in the first half. Scores should have been made in the second period hut for poor generalship in lirecting the plays, which lost the ball to Bucknell on the one yard line, and again on the ten yard line. After that Penn put a number of substitutes in the game, and while Bucknell was never dangerous, the Red and Blue could not get the ball over the line. Penn's team play showed much improvement, and the line braced up and made a good showing against a physically strong team. There were several disqualifications for roughness.

Keinath was hurt after catching a punt. A few plays Jater Munk was disabled, and MeNinch, who took his place, did not last long, as he was tent from the game for slugging. Coulston went in at quarter, but he, too, had to leave the game because of injury to his leg. and Ileemer finished out the contest. In the second half Marks was disqualified for roughness.

Only a few attempts were made to use the forward rass they were not successful. The game was fought out on the lines of straight Fena devoted her attack to line bucking and end runs by Keinath and Ilollenback. Bucknell did some good work in advancing the ball, but did not persist In her efforts. As the punting by McAllister was weak, play was almost continually In the visitors' territory. Had Penn made more determined efforts to score, using the forward pass and mixing tip her plays better, the score would have -been larger.

No doubt Bill Ilollenback refrained from turning loose anything novel, because Villanova is played Wednesday, and a hard game is expected. Special to The Inquirer. WILKES-BAEEE, Oct. 3. Scoring only by field goals the Carlisle Indians managed to defeat the State College team, here this afternoon, the game being the first big college game played here, and over ten thousand persons saw it.

The score, 12 to 5, was smaller than had been expected, as the Indians, owing to their three weeks extra training and to the fact that the State College men had only three of last season's men on the team, were confident that they would roll up a big score. State College, however, scored in the first few minutes of play, and, encouraged by this, the men played a. plucky game for the remainder of the time, A missed signal a little later in the first half lost them the ball when they had a chance to make another touchdown, and after that the Indians were never in danger. Weaver's fine work resulted in State's only score. He managed to break through the line when Balenti was about to kick from the twenty yard line, blocked the kick, seized the ball, dodged two Indian backs and was across the line like a flash.

Voorbees. failed to kick the goal. All of the Indians' scores were on goals kicked from the field by Thorp, one in the first half and two in the second half, and none of them easy ones. He also barely missed two others in the last five minutes of play, one from the 45 yard line and the other from the fifty yard line. The Indians' great fault was fumbling and slowness in picking up rolling kicks and regaining the ball after fumbles, and State College profited greatly by this fault and took advantage of this failing: to kick a great deal, Bellew.

who did most of it, holding his own with Balenti and Thorpe. State College could gain but little through the line, but made several clever end runs, and their quickness in getting down the field after kicks and recovering fumbles resulted in their gaining much ground. They seldom managed to gain a first down through the line and the Indians broke up their interference rapidly. However, considering the newness of the team they played well, and the coaches are much encouraged. The Indians tried many end rans and gained much ground by them, but were not so strong in the forward passes, although some good gains were made in this manner.

Most of the time, however. State got the ball on passes, these Indians fumbling the throw often. In the second half the Indians changed their line of attack and bucked the line frequently, forcing State back to the two yard line, where a fumble lost them the ball arid Bellew wasted no time in kicking out of danger. The work of Bellew. Weaver, Voorhees and Piolett was particularly good for the State, and that of Thorpe.

Bucknell won. the toss, and Hollenback kicked off from the east goal against a very slight wind. Penn was offside on the first kick, and the ball was put back five yards. McAllister caught the ball on the next kick and ran it back to the twenty yard line, where he was downed by Pike. Shupe punted at once, but the kick was blocked, and Townsend secured the ball in the scramble, for renn, on the Bucknell forty yard line.

Penn then advanced the ball to the ten -yard line, where she was held for downs. On the third down, with two yards to go Hollenback tried to get through left of the line, but McAllister smashed the interference and downed him for only one yard gain. In the early part of the game Penn's interference was not compact, and broke up easily. Later there was an Improvement made, and the runners were better protected. Shupe punted, and Ilollenback got a free catch on Bucknell's thirty-three yard line.

After Keinath had twice lost ground, a forward pass by Keinath was tried, but Braddock dropping the ball recovered it on the seventeen yard line. Manier took the ball on the next play and gained ground, but Penn was penalized fifteen yards. A line smash advanced the ball, but Keinath could not evade the Bucknell forwards, and was thrown for a loss. Then the quarter-back kick was tried, and the ball went into the hands of Winegarden. who got it down on his own forty yard line.

McAllister punted, and Keinath got the ball down on Perm's forty-five yard line. As some one had planted their knee on his face Keinath did not get up right away. He took the count, but revived and went on playing. Pike hit the centre for three yards, after which there was a long consultation bv the I'enn tani. presumably to give Keinath a longer rest.

When Hollenbach next took the ball he finished off the tii-it down started by Hollenbach. After one more play Hollenback punted and Mnnk caught the ball on his 15-yard line. McAllister punted weakly and Keinath got the ball on Bucknell's 3M-yard line, where he was tackled by Shupe. Penn blazed awav again, and aided by a ten-vard run around right end by Hollenback the ball was carried over the line desrdte a o-yard penalty. Hollenback made the touchdown by skirting the end and rolling over the goal line after being thrown from his feet.

He missed the goal and the score was 5 to O. The second score came quickly enough. Hollenback ran the kick off back from the 10-yard to the T)0-yard line by breaking aWav from behind the hunch and skirting down close to the side lines. tnree plunges by Townsend. Hollenback and Manier scored a first touchdown inside the 5-yard line.

Townsend made the touchdown and Hollenback failed to kick. ttie goal. Score 10 to O. The third and final score was not obtained until near the close of the first half. Mean while Bucknell played some football and Penn had her troubles ror awnile.

Hollenback kicked off to McAllister on Bucknell's 20-yard line. A plunge through the line lost the ball for the visitors, for when it was fumbled Marks fell on it on the 18-yard lino. Marks -followed the ball very closely, and recovered wveral fumbles. Penn tried to beat her way to the goal line, but after two efforts to get through the line without success a forward pass was tried. Keinath passed to Townsend.

who threw out to the end. where Shupe secured It. Shupe could not gain, so McAllister printed and Hollenback got the ball down on Bucknell's 45-vard line. I'enn suffered a penalty which put the ball on Penn's 50-yard mark. Hollenback punted and Clausen got the ball on the enemy's 33-yard line.

Two yards were gained on a delayed pass. Bucktieil aimed at the left of Penn's line, which showed weakness all throngh the game. Shupe went through tackle for 10 yards, McAllister gained 6 yards in two plunges and then minted, the ball going out of bounds on I'enn 's 25-vard line. Hollenback got in one of his famous fake kick runs, skirting left end for 20 yards to Perm's 45-yard line. Shupe made the tackle und wa.s hurt.

Manier tried to dash down the t-Ule line, but fumbled the ball. Marks fell on it. After one more play Hollenback punt--d to Clausen on Bucknell's 25-yard line, being tackled by Gaston. After one trial to advance McAllister punted to Keinath on Penn's 40-yard line. Pike was aiven the ball and he traveled along for 20 yards before being downed.

Harvard's 'varsity defeated the weak team from the University of Maine this afternoon in the stadium by the one-sided score of 16 to O. The Maine team played a defensive game after their fourth rush, and never were within striking distance of the Crimson's goal line. Harvard's back field combination worked well and the new quarter depended for greater part of his gains on end runs by Corbett and line-ripping by Smith. The Crimson line played lower and charged better than on Wednesday, but there is a chance for improvement. Harvard's first score came after eli minutes of play, after Maine had got the ball on kickoff and been forced to punt.

Sharp end runs by Corbett, gains through the line by Kennard and Smith, and clever use of forward pass took the ball to Maine's three-yard line, where Smith went over with a tearing rush through centre. McKay kicked goal. Harvard scored a second touchdown toward the end of the first half, after the ball bad gene to Maine's 25-yard line on a successful on-side kick to Crowley. End runs and lint bucks followed, and Corbett took the ball over for a touchdown, slipping off right tackle. Here McKay failed to kick goal and after kickoff and few rushes the half ended with the ball in Harvard's possession on Maine's 25-vard line.

Both teams made several changes in the second half, and Harvard had a new back field. The Crimson scored toward the end of the game after Maine had been forced to punt from her ten-yprd mark. The ball shot high In the air and Nourse recovered it on Maine's 15-yard" line. Line plunging by Graydon and White carried the pigskin to within four yards cf the goal line, where White went over the chalk-mark for a touchdown. Dnnlap.
