The officials of the Cunard Steamship Company are hoping for a new record by the Maure-tania, which sailed from here at five o'clock this afternoon for New York. The Mauretania has been completely overhauled in flie past nine the principal improvement effected being the addition of two new propellers, which leads to the expectation that she will outdo the Lusitania's performances. Efforts are being made to withhold information regarding the propellers, which are known to be different from these of the Lusitania. The new propellers on the Mauretania have been placed forward, port and starboard. They differ from the two after propellers in that they have four blades instead of three.

The weight of each is eighteen tons, whereas those aft weight twenty-two tons each. They are made of solid manganese bronze. The new arrangement, two propellers working close in and two outside at a distance of eighty feet, is expected to improve the equilibrium of the steamer in addition to the speed record. The law under which licenses to sell intoxicating liquors are granted in Connecticut is upheld by the Supreme Court of Errors in a decision just handed down. The test was made by the Prohibitionists of the State through appeal of one Morrell, of (Jreenwieh. who acted as a citizen niereiy in objecting to the granting by the County Commissioners of a license in Greenwich. Chief Justice Haldwin, who wrote the opinion, says that while the Bible whieh stood for a rule of politieal government LONDON, Jan. 23.

It has been suggested by the Continental delegation, in view of the inability of the International Naval Conference as at present constituted to agree on some of the most vital questions, that an effort be made to draw up a code of naval warfare for the great powers, exclusive of America, on whom the Continental delegates place the blame for the deadlock which has been reached. Thus far there has been no formal discussion of this suggestion, but it has been the subject of general conversation among the delegates, some of whom profess to consider it practical. Others, however, see in it many difficulties, the greatest of which is the attitude Japan would take toward it. The Japanese representatives, like the Americans, continue to hold to their original opinion on questions such as "continuous voyage" and on the definition of contraband, and those best informed say that if America is eliminated from the conference Japan Avill follow her. Have Not Stopped Work The possibility of the conference again reaching a working basis was said by one of the delegates to be a little better today, but it still was not bright enough to say that it was probable.

The delegates continue to busy themselves with technical subjects while awaiting the call of England for another plenary session, which, until the present crisis arose, was held three times a week. It was thought that the next plenary session might be convened next Monday, "mil up to the present the arrangements for Monday consist of two committee meeting" similar to those held on Friday. Tints, while the crisis continues, work, which will be useful if the conferences go on, is being done by these optimistic ones who are still hopeful, and who are looking forward to the return to London of Sir Edward Grey on Monday. The Italians were run down and surrounded by a posse and finally committed suicide.

Plamird TloIJer- si II yen so The Italians had been employed in a rubber factory, but having been discharged, they planned to revenge themselves on their employers. They lay in wait near the factory and seized a bag of money containing the week's pay 01 all the hands. They then started on a mad dash down the street.

The police were summoned and started in pursuit in a motor car. As they approached the Italians the robbers opened lire with automatic pistols on their pursuers. A number of men and boys on the street were shot down before they could recover from their surprise and get to cover. The Italians kept ahead of the automobile until they came up with a trolley car. This they boarded, and, making their way to the front platform, forced the driver, at the point of their revolvers, to throw on full speed.

The car went thundering lown the track with the I'olice automobile still in pursuit.
