HIGH SCHOOLS Prep QB TRACK AND FIELD 6-F Monday, Feb. 5, 1990 The Philadelphia Inquirer A big victory after a slow start for Dawn Sowell in Virginia meet iNMM iiifll 1 i Joe chooses By Mike Jensen tnqwn'T Xlutl Writer Frank Costa, an all-area quarterback from St. Joseph's Prep, has made an oral commitment to attend the University of Miami. Penn State was the first school to actively recruit Costa. In coach Joe Paterno's favor was the fact that Costa, the most prolific passer in Philadelphia high school history, had been a lifelong Nittany Lions fan and had gone to the Lions' football camp after his sophomore and junior years.

But when a Miami assistant coach called Costa on Wednesday and told him the Hurricanes the 1983, 1987 and 1989 national champions wanted him more than any other quarterback in the country, Costa took very little time to make a decision. The next day, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior made his commitment to Miami, where he hopes to follow in the path of four Hurricanes quarterbacks now in the NFL Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Steve Walsh, and his hero, Vinny Testaverde. "He wants to be the next Testaverde," said his father, Frank Sr. Costa will leave his home in South beat Joyner-Kersee for the second time in three days when she finished first in the women's 55-meter hurdles, in 7.99 seconds. Joyner-Kersee, the American record holder in the event, was timed in 8.04.

Arthur Blake, 22, also pulled off an upset when he outran an exceptional field in the men's 60-meter hurdles, winning in a personal best of 7.51. Greg Foster was second in 7.56, while Roger Kingdom, the two-time Olympic champion and outdoor world-record holder, was sixth and last. Only 0.12 seconds separated him from first. 1 Pleased for his team's future, Villa-nova coach Marty Stern sent an all-freshman team of Irene Rupoli, Nnenna Lynch, Cheri Goddard and Abby Hunte into the women's relay and saw it finish a stride ahead of runner-up Georgetown, in 8:51.49. The victory was the second of the weekend for the Villanova women's team.

It won the Millrose Games two-mile relay in 8:45 flat, with a lineup of Michel Torrelli, Kim Certain, Goddard and Michelle Bennett. The Wildcats men's relay team also was successful, with the team of Aidan O'Regan, Quentin Howe, Brad Sumner and Mike Seeger winning in 7:26.54, the fastest time in the country this year. plans among them. "Outdoors, I want to run the 100 meters! in 10.8 consistently," she said. "That's really important to me." O'Sullivan, the ex-Villanova runner from Ireland, also came away from Mobil 1 with a discovery: that he needs some rest and recuperation.

O'Sullivan, the two-time world indoor champion in the mile, whose personal best undercover is 3 minutes, 50.94 seconds, was a weary runner-up at that distance to East Germany's Jens-Peter Herold. O'Sullivan failed to respond when Herold took the lead shortly after the field had passed the three-quarters mark. The East German, who took the bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics, won the race in 3:58.96. O'Sullivan was second in 4:00.39. "I now know that I ran Friday on emotions rather than physical fitness," said O'Sullivan, who had won his fourth Wanamaker Mile title two nights earlier in the Millrose meet at Madison Square Garden.

"I'm not in shape," O'Sullivan added, pointing out that he raced almost into October during last year's outdoor season. "It's starting to show, but you can't do much about it." O'Sullivan also revealed that his old problem of insomnia had returned, to defy his statements of Friday night, when he suggested that his sleeping trouble was over. "I spoke too soon," said O'Sullivan. "I thought it was over, and then I didn't get to sleep until 5:30 Saturday morning. It doesn't help you." The meet was a curious mix of some performances plagued by problems and others that produced meet records.

Among the latter, three of the best were turned in by Romanian athletes. Sorin Matei soared 7 feet, 7 inches in the men's high jump to top US. champion Hollis Conway, and added a half-inch to the old meet standard set by Jake Jacoby a year ago. Viorica Ghican, separating herself from the pack by more than 30 yards with several laps to go, took the women's mile in 4:27.10, knocking more than 10 seconds off the former meet record, set by Linda Sheskey last year, in the process. Doina Melinte similarly outdistanced the field in the women's 800, and her winning time of 2:00.13 broke the old meet record of 2:02.14 set by Paula Ivan, her now-injured teammate, in last year's meet.

Clarence Daniel of the Florida Clippers pulled off an upset when he outkicked Butch Reynolds in the stretch to win the men's 400 meters in 46.28, a meet record. Reynolds, the outdoor world-record holder, was second in 47.31, only .02 ahead of Antonio Pettigrew. In other events, Lavonna Martin A dominating presence for Delsea Miami Philadelphia after setting city records for career passing yards touchdowns (35), completions (373) and attempts (681); single-season passing yards (2.547), touchdowns (24), completions (196) and attempts (333), and single-game completions (27). "It's always been a dream of mine to play at Miami, since I was a freshman," said Costa, who announced his decision at the St. Joseph's Prep football banquet on Saturday night.

"Since Vince Testaverde went there. He's sort of my idol. He plays the same style. He's tall and thin. He's a pocket passer.

He's Italian." After making his decision, Costa canceled trips to Illinois and Rutgers and spurned Notre Dame, which had shown late interest. John Sacca, a quarterback and all-area defensive back at Delran, and Phil Collins, a quarterback at Cinna-minson, have made oral commitments to attend Penn State. Eric Counts, a 6-3, 224-pound all-area offensive lineman from Lenape, has made an oral commitment to attend North Carolina State. Sacca will join his brother Tony, a sophomore quarterback, at Penn Demetrius Poles 55 points, 49 rebounds, 2 games Boys' basketball player of the week As a freshman, Poles was Delsea's sixth man. For the change of scenery as well as the obvious competitive advantage, Dawn Sowell someday would like to start a sprint race out in front of her opposition. Sowell had another familiar look at her rivals' backs yesterday in the Mobil 1 Invitational meet at George Mason University, where she was the last of six sprinters to leave the starting blocks in the women's 60-meter dash. Sowell was also the first of the six to finish the race, with a time of 7.18 seconds that equaled the meet record set by Gwen Torrence. Hers was one of several big performances in the competition, in which meet records were set in the men's 400 meters and high jump and in the women's mile, 400 meters and 800 meters, and in which some top performers, such as Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Marcus O'Sullivan, came up short.

Given an explosive start, or just an even break, it is more than likely that Sowell would stun every timing crew that stop-watched her with record performances. She would do even better, one suspects, than she did last summer, when she won the NCAA and TAC outdoor 100-meter titles, and gave credence to the opinion that she is the next Florence Griffth Joyner. But the 23-year-old sprint star, whose career began at Chester High School, will be the last person to predict anything so grand for her exasperating indoor season. "I'm just not the type of sprinter who can accelerate quickly," Sowell said. "I've worked on it and worked on it, but I need some distance before I really start accelerating." Unfortunately, Sowell said she needs about 50 meters before her afterburners kick in and she hits top speed, and most indoor races are 55 meters long.

"I detest the 55 meters," Sowell said after she had shot past Michelle Finn in the final strides of the 60, to the applause of 5,200 fans, among them the now-retired Flo-Jo. "It's too short. I'm just running these races to get in shape for the outdoor season. I'll probably run next Friday night at the Meadowlands and that's it. I'm tired of getting beat up on." Indeed, Sowell was hardly fooled by her victory, which she attributed more to the extra 5 meters over the usual indoor distance than to any breakthrough in technique.

Sowell is now living in Stillwater, where she is training under Paul Richards, the man who coached her four seasons ago at the University of Texas. Despite her frustration with the indoor season, and unaccustomed finishes, such as her third place in the Millrose Games on Friday night, Sowell has large ambitions for the summer marriage i '85 FORD LTD CROWN VICTORIA POWER MOOHROOr White Skae ft Luther i Blue Vnrl Top, PS, PB, PW, AMFM Stereo Cass, Wire Wheels, PDL. (Andre Collins, the oldest of the three Collins brothers, was an all-America linebacker at Penn State last season.) Sacca (6-3, 185) led Delran to an 11-0 record and the South Jersey Group 2 championship last fall, passing for more than 1,300 yards, and was recruited by Penn State as a quarterback. 2 Collins (5-11, 180) was a running back and a quarterback at Cinnamin-son, but his 4.45-second speed in the 40-yard dash led Penn State to recruit him as a wide receiver.

Staff writer Don McKee contributed to this article. to blossom. And the recruiters' inquiries began to increase. "My mailbox is full every day," Briles said. "He gets letters from coast to coast." "Last year, he started taking control on the court.

But this year, he's dominating," Briles added. "And the nice thing is that we have a good supporting cast around him. He helps them, and they help him." Poles scores most of his points on offensive rebounds and outside jumpers. But it is his playmaking, not his scoring, that may be his best quality. Said Briles: "His passing ability is uncanny When we get him the ball, it's not always with his back to the basket.

A lot of the time, he's out by the three-point line, setting everyone up. He just has a great knowledge of the game. He always knows where everyone else is on the floor and where they should be. He keeps everyone moving." "When he has the ball." Briles added in a matter-of-fact tone, "we score." Simple as that. Or Penns Grove. Poles, The Inquirer's South Jersey boys' basketball player of the week, led Delsea to important Tri-County Conference wins over both teams last week. And he did it by putting together some stunning numbers. Consider: Poles had 24 points, 31 rebounds (a school record), 11 assists and seven blocks in Delsea's 82-75 win over highly regarded Salem on Tuesday. Three days later, Poles had 31 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and four blocks as Delsea (14-1 overall, 14-0 league) defeated Penns Grove, 81-71, and increased its Royal Division lead to Vi games over second-place Kingsway.

For the season, Poles is averaging 20.7 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and five blocks per game.
