ad THE PHILADELPHIA INOUTRER. SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 28, 1950 'All About Eve Opens on Fox Screen CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCES! LOS'iST MAT. TODAT 8:30 LAST TIME TONIGHT 8:30 'A Drama with Mounting Intensity' Inq. 'Profound ft Deoply Moving Drama' BulL ARTHUR SCHWARTZ presents JESSCCA 7AC3DV DMID cally the due of Celeste Holm as the playwright's charming, nonprofessional wife; Gary Merrill, now Miss Davis' real-life husband, as the director; George Sanders, the critic with an eye for blondes and a cynical view of life in and out of the theater; Hugh Marlowe, the playwright; Thelma Ritter, Margo's independent, outspoken maid; Gregory Ratoff, a producer, and Marilyn Monroe, blonde babe from the nightclub beat. There are others, too, lots of them, and all an integral part of a scintillating, stimulating, extraordinary achievement.

Beginning with the presentation of the Sarah Siddons Award to Eve Harrington while her "friends" watch, the film slips into flashback to show just how Eve won her coveted prize.

THEY KNOW ABOUT EVE Those most concerned, and thus best able to fill in tiie gap between a rainy October night and the present June celebration, those who know "all about Eve" are Margo Channing, the actress into whose life Eve wormed her way and undertook to destroy, the wife of the playwright Eve attempted to supplant, and a cynical critic-columnist who, himself a killer, unhesitatingly turned the law of the jungle upon Eve. Detailed, dazzling, building unerringly toward its several climaxes, the drama is alive with excitement and humor, raw, rousing quarrels and fine-grained, consistent characterizations. NOT A POOR PART IN IT An actor's dream, there is not a poor or unimportant part anywhere to be 'found in it. For although Bette Davis and Anne Baxter divide stellar honors about evenly as the tempestuous, age-haunted actress victimized by a minx and the conscienceless little liar who knows exactly where she is going, every other role has been played with the same perfection. Glowing adjectives are emphati- By Mildred Martin Broadway might just as well give in and bow to Hollywood.

For in "All About Eve," the movies have beaten the theater at its own game, turned out probably the most pungent play about show business and footlight folk of our time, coated a stunning drama in lines that are as right as they are literate. All things work together for good In this potential award -winner which, flying the Darryl F. Zanuck production banner, came to the Fox yesterday to hold an audience spellbound for nearly two hours and a half. If that seems a very long time for a film to run, we can assure you it's not one minute too long as brilliantly played by a hand-picked cast under the direction of Joseph L. Mankiewicz, its equally brilliant scenarist.

AUTHENTIC ATMOSPHERE It doesn't require any "inside" knowledge to enjoy "All About Eve," although those familiar with behind-the-scenes aspects of the theater will undoubtedly get an added fillip from the action, the easily recognizable portraits presented, the fine realistic flavor of the dialogue, the authentic atmosphere. If, ironically, it has taken the movies to hold the most revealing mirror up to Broadway it is to the screen's credit that the picture presented is neither wantonly disagreeable nor smacking of caricature. Firmly keeping in mind that after all the play's the thing, "All About Eve" is primarily concerned with holding attention through its story, its characters, their effect upon one another and, only secondly, with glittering window dressing. SWEET LITTLE MONSTER Using a short story by Mary Orr as dramatic springboard, Director-writer Mankiewicz is telling of a guest in the house of the theater; WILLIAM GOLDMAN CENTRAL THEY'RE theTERROR of the DOLL ON THE SPOT!
