today and Maple Shade, 600 E. Main Maple Shade: Mass, 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Our By Connie O'Kane Special to The Inquirer A Philadelphia man was in critical condition last night after he was burned while painting in a Salem County factory, company and fire officials said. The victim, Frederick DeRogatis, 68, of the 1300 block of Pennington Road, was in the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Chester with second- and third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body, a hospital spokesman said. DeRogatis suffered burns to his arms, legs, neck and upper torso, fire officials said.

Fumes from the paint apparently caught fire, though fire officials were uncertain last night why. The fire ignited DeRogatis' clothing. Two other employees at Frangible Discs Inc. in Carneys Point threw a blanket on him to extinguish the flames, according to Dan Ford, chief engineer of the Carneys Point Fire Department and Rescue Squad. The fire broke out about 8:40 a.m.

in a paint booth at the company. The firm makes industrial pressure-relieving devices. DeRogatis was alone in the painting booth, which is about 12 by 20 feet, Ford said. DeRogatis was spraying acrylic enamel paint from a paint pot when the fire started, company officials said. "There is a description of a slight explosion, a poof, which suggests a flash of gases," Ford said.

Ford said that fire officials have Special to The inquirer MARTY O' GRADY Fire investigators (from left) Dan Ford, Arnold DiTeodoro and John Yaeger outside the factory. not been able to talk to DeRogatis The fire, which was put out in other employees were evacuated to determine what ignited the about 20 minutes, damaged about from the factory without injury. fumes.
