Friday, Feb. 2, 1990 The Philadelphia Inquirer 17-C Death Notices OBITUARIES Frances A. G. Garvey, 38, nurse; displayed courage after 3 strokes By Ralph Clprlano Inquirer stall wriier Frances Anne Grover Garvey, 38, a registered nurse who survived a crippling series of strokes that showed her family and friends what courage was all about, died Wednesday at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital.

In 1981, nine days after she gave birth to a healthy, blond, blue-eyed girl, Erin Marie, Mrs. Garvey suf- fered three successive strokes. She was left paralyzed from the neck down, but she learned to communicate by blinking her eyes. One blink meant yes, two blinks, no. Later, she regained the partial use of three fingers on her left hand and she would type her thoughts on a word processor.

"She was a beautiful, intelligent woman who was trapped in a body that couldn't walk or talk," said her husband, Joseph Garvey, 41, of Oxford Circle. "I was in the Marines," Garvey "I was wounded in Vietnam. I thought I knew what courage was. the Medal of Honor is not enough for people who are in wheelchairs." After the strokes, doctors told Mrs. Garvey, then 29, that she would be lucky to live out the weekend.

Her daughter was baptized in the hospital. At night, the nurses, at the insistence of her husband, would bring Erin Marie by to sleep beside her mother. Mrs. Garvey spent five months in Episcopal Hospital and five months in a nursing home. By that time she had come to terms with her plight.

She then resolved to live as normal a life as possible so that she could help raise her daughter. "I think that Fran's message to all of us was, 'This is the situation and I'm going to deal with it so you had better said her sister, Marie ketball game, or the parent-teacher meeting. "She was just determined to watch this little girl grow," her sister said. If Mrs. Garvey, a singer in her youth, who played guitar and piano, couldn't talk to her daughter, she left her messages on computer printouts, like "I love you." Or "Good morning sunshine, mommy loves you.

Take off your clothes and put on your school uniform." If she couldn't decorate her new house herself, she could write up detailed plans for others on her computer. She devoted herself to planning the details of family life. Family members, including McCarthy's husband, David, took turns bathing and feeding Mrs. Garvey, and transporting her to school, events. Especially in the beginning, Mrs.

Garvey leaned on her husband, her sister said. As a Marine in Vietnam, Garvey won a Purple Heart and Bronze Star after he was shot in both legs and stabbed in the stomach. The experience also helped prepare him for Mrs. Garvey's rehabilitation, he said. "The Marines taught us you never leave anybody behind," he said.

"You carry them back but you do not give up on anybody. Never give up on people. Because the mind controls the body." A graduate of St. Agnes Nursing School, Mrs. Garvey was staff-development instructor at Episcopal Hospital.

In addition to her husband, daughter and sister, she is survived by her mother, Marie F. Grover; brothers, Charles V. Grover and. Gerald P. Grover, and many nieces and nephews.

By Ralph Cipriano Inquirer Staff Writer Anna Johnson Grim, 76, a dressmaker who went to night school for nine years to become the first woman engineer to work for the city, died Wednesday at Jeanes Hospital in Fox Chase. In 1943, Mrs. Grim was a dressmaker for Lit Bros, when she enrolled as a student in the Spring Garden Institute. In 1946, she joined the city as a draftsman, and in 1952, when she received her engineering degree, she became the city's first woman engineer. "I used to be a dressmaker," she said in a 1958 newspaper interview.

"That sounds a little farfetched now, but the elements of design are somewhat the same." In the newspaper story, Mrs. Grim said her pioneering role was tough at first. "All of our contractors are men and they were certainly surprised to see me In this job," she said. "It's not an easy role. It's a perpetual challenge." She added: "But I love my work and I think this feeling gets through to the person I'm dealing with.

If you act normal in a man's world, are honest and sincere, you'll soon be accepted." Frances Anne Grover Garvey McCarthy, 43, a teacher. "She told my mom not to be bitter. She said life was too precious to go on with that type of bitterness. She said we can deal with it. We can get through this together." As Erin grew up, Mrs.

Garvey made sure she didn't miss her daughter's soccer practices or basketball games. Usually, Mrs. Garvey had to be carried in and out of buildings and pushed in wheelchairs. But she was a regular at parent-teacher conferences. The family even took a vacation to Disney World in Florida.

"It wasn't easy for her," her sister said. "She was a private person. She wasn't big on crowds and people would gawk at her and little kids would say, 'Hey, what's wrong with your "The suffering she took upon herself in public," her sister recalled. "Her legs would shake. She would drool.

But it didn't stop her from going to the soccer practice, the bas As a communications engineer for the city, Mrs. Grim designed communications systems for city firehouses and police stations and special events such as the annual Army-Navy game. It was Mrs. Grim who assigned call numbers to the city's schools that are still used on radio and television announcements for school closings due to bad weather. Previously, announcers would rattle the schools off by name.

Mrs. Grim retired in 1979. That year she also married her former boss, Edgar Purcell Grim, the "Chief," Who was the former chief of the communications and special services division of the city's Department of Public Property. "Chief" Grim retired in 1982 as the city's oldest public servant at age 82, after 63 years of service. It was the second marriage for both Mr.

and Mrs. Grim, who had been friends for years. "She was a wonderful employee," Grim said. "It was wonderful with her when we were working together and it was more wonderful when we were married." Mrs. Grim is survived by her husband; a sister, Astoria Swered; two nephews, and a niece.
