12-BJ Friday, July 10, 1987 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices OBITUARIES Francis Gorman, 62, assemblyman and Gloucester City finance chief By Andrew Maykuth Inquirer Stall Writer Francis J. Gorman, 62, who served as the Fifth District assemblyman and Gloucester City's chief financial officer until March, died 4ate Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center after a prolonged illness. In a world of bornbast, "Franny" Gorman was comfortable with his low political profile. Part of a family line of Gloucester City Democrats, he did not measure his effectiveness in 14 years as an assemblyman in terms of the amount of legislation proposed. "Over thd years, I've not taken a big interest in introducing a lot of legislation," Mr.

Gorman said in 1982. "We don't need more laws, we need less. The point is to be a representative of the people." Rather, Mr. Gorman said, he took pride in cutting the red tape of the bureaucracy for his constituents. "He liked backroom politics, I guess you could say," said Robert Gorman, 25, who followed his father as First Ward Democratic committeeman.

"Some people didn't know him, but he kept getting elected all those years," said Robert Gorman. "Other politicians got their names in the headlines, but my father saw a lot of those people come and go." In 1953, after serving in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Gorman was elected First Ward councilman. Between the wars, Service tomorrow for Curtis Gano, 16 Funeral services will be tomorrow for Curtis Gano, 16, of Cherry Hill, who died Wednesday from head injuries at Cooper Regional Trauma Center, Camden. He was struck Monday by a van while crossing Route 70 at Springdale Road on his bicycle.

He recently had finished his sophomore year at Cherry Hill High School South Jersey deaths he received a degree from LaSalle College. His entry into politics in the blue-collar, waterfront town was paved by his father, John F. Gorman, who was Camden County sheriff and had been mayor of Gloucester City. Mr. Gorman remained a councilman until 1957, when he became city treasurer, tax collector and custodian of funds for the Board of Education.

He held those positions until he retired three months ago. In the meantime, he became a local political force, serving for many of the last 20 years as chairman of the city's Democratic Committee. He was delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968 and 1976. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1971 and served until he was defeated in a factional dispute in the 1979 Democratic primary. He was elected again in 1981.

"We had good chemistry," said Assemblyman Wayne R. Bryant, who ran as a team with Mr. Gorman and state Sen. Walter Rand. They described him as a man of dry wit and a compassion for common people, which he expressed in his vigorous support for the state's community colleges.

During his 14 years in the Assembly, Mr. Gorman was a member of numerous committees and held several leadership posts. Most recently, he was the Assembly minority leader. Mr. Gorman's health deteriorated in recent years because of pulmonary and heart conditions, out in East.

He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, where he" was a member of several youth organizations. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Vivian; a brother, Tom; a sister, Sheri; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Wallace of Easton, and his paternal grandparents, Frances macy. She was one of the original members of the Mount Holly Hebrew Social Club, the precursor of Temple Har Zion, where she was a member of the congregation and an officer of the sisterhood. She also was an active member of the Anti-Defamation League and a volunteer in a number of community organizations.
