It is designed to ease county growing pains.

A version of this article ran in some Saturday editions. ByMarcSchogol INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Like the railroads pushing West in frontier days, SEPTA will push Chester County commuter rail service one stop farther tomorrow with the opening of its new Thorn-dale station. Thorndale now becomes the end of the line for most Route R5 Paoli-Downingtown Line trains that have terminated at the Downingtown station. The station at South Bailey Road and Route 30, which has a 450-car lot, is part of an expansion plan designed to serve Chester County's rapidly growing population and clear congested arteries caused by a major reconstruction of Route 202. Beginning tomorrow, with the opening of service to Thorndale, SEPTA says the following schedule changes will go into effect: The inbound train that has been leaving the Downingtown station at 6:54 a.m.

will become the Great Valley Flyer, departing from Thorndale at 6:56. En route to Center City, the express will stop only at Downingtown, Whitford, Exton, Malvern and Paoli. The 7 a.m. inbound train from Malvern will leave at 6:59 and add a station stop at Daylesford. A new inbound train will leave warns the Paoli station at 7:14 a.m.

and make all local station stops to the Wayne station. It then will run express to Bryn Mawr and from there run as a local to Center City. This train will replace the 7:33 Bryn Mawr local. The outbound 5:36 p.m. train to Malvern will depart Suburban Station at 5:38 p.m.

and operate as an express between the 30th Street and Ardmore stations. It then will make all local stops to Malvern. The outbound 5:39 p.m. express to Malvern will become the return Great Valley Flyer. Departing Suburban Station at 5:41 p.m., it will operate as an express between 30th Street and Paoli stations and then make all local stops to Thorndale.

The outbound 5:50 p.m. train to Bryn Mawr will be extended to operate as an express between the Bryn Mawr and Wayne stations. It then will make all local stops to Malvern. As both a commuter and as executive director of the Chester County Development Council, Gary Smith, who lives in nearby West Bradford Township, said he welcomed the Do you always brace yourself for the worst? "Civilization comes west!" he said, only partly facetiously. "The whole migration of our population base has been moving west for some time," Smith said. "This," he said, referring to the area between Downingtown and Coatesville, "is just the next stop out." "I remember years ago when we lobbied to get the Exton station. Paoli was the end of the line.

Then Downingtown, we worked real hard to get that. This one brings another population center closer to the region." SEPTA once ran its trains even farther west, to Coatesville and Parkesburg, but that service was cut in 1996. The current Route R5 weekday traffic beyond Paoli has been running about 3,000 passengers a day. SEPTA expects that will increase with the opening of the new station, but has no specific estimates. Smith said Chester County badly needed public transit to help "alleviate some of the automobile traffic that congests our roads leading to employment centers along Route 202 as well as in Philadelphia." Reverse commuters increasingly also clog those roads and necessarily so, because Smith said Chester County has a labor shortage.

Smith acknowledged that the new rail terminus also will increase development pressures in an area that still has abundant open space.
