Jump Up, New Frontier, My Prima Vera Obituaries John O'Donnell Association president, 85 John O'Donnell, 85, of Glenside, retired president of a gas station owners' association, died Tuesday at Abington Memorial Hospital of pneumonia. In 1981, he retired as president of the Pennsylvania Service Station Dealers Association after years in that position. At a retirement ceremony, he was cited by then-executive director Thomas Anderson as a "most revered and respected man." In 1958, Mr.

O'Donnell left the dairy business to operate a service station in Jenkintown leased from Atlantic Refining Co. Two years later, he was offered a larger station in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section. He operated that station until 1967, when he acquired his own station in Plymouth Meeting. Over the years, Mr. O'Donnell identified the need for an organization of service-station owners.

In the early 1970s, he joined others in forming the Pennsylvania Service Station Dealers Association, which he served as comptroller, president and assistant executive director. After his retirement, he served as treasurer of the Service Station Dealers Credit Union. Also in retirement, Mr. O'Donnell took pilot training, studied mathematics and small engine repair, went whitewater rafting and flew in a glider. With his wife, he took vacations in Colorado, South Dakota and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Born in Philadelphia as one of 12 children, Mr. O'Donnell graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1932 and went to work in an automotive electrical shop. After that, he worked for several years as a chauffeur. He married the "girl next door" in 1938 and over the following 18 years they had 13 children. During World War II, he served in the Army.

After his honorable discharge, he became a milkman for the former Supplee-Wills-Jones Co. At night, he used the G.I. Bill to attend what is now La Salle University and in 1952 he received a bachelor's degree in industrial management. "He was known for his patience and profound respect for others," said a son, John O'Donnell. His wife of 49 years, Thelma Woodroffe O'Donnell, died in 1997.

In addition to his son, he is survived by children Judy, Peter, Linda, Jane, Mark, Dennis, Sally, Chris, Betsy, Fran, Dave and Rene; five sisters; two brothers; 30 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. today at the William R. May Funeral Home, Easton Road and Keswick Avenue, Glenside. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
