On the Town Debut of horror Film of secret passages filled with cliches By Desmond Ryan Inquirer Movit Critic So you want to be in pictures? For young and untried directors a proven formula is emerging.

Scrape up a low budget the lower the bet- ter and write a horror film. Don't worry about sense, pace, character or other excess baggage, just dredge up every cheap trick that you can remember from every horror movie you saw at the Saturday matinees of your youth. Push it as a cult film. Hollywood, ever on the lookout for the next Steven Spielberg particu- larly after "1941" will inevitably and the situation mined with cliches. A young coed and a killer on the prowl.

Even though this kind of movie is aimed at a drive-in mentality and lower, the director making one owes something to the requirements of suspense. "Silent Scream" telegraphs what is to come in the most obvious way and the movie is devoid of the least bit of tension. The premise of "Silent Scream" calls for many loud objections. It hinges on a psychotic young woman (played at maximum drool by Barbara Steele) who despite a bloody record returns to live with her weird mother and brother at the mansion. Naturally, some students from a nearby college rent rooms and wind up as carving practice.

The college's entrance standards must be low, since they react toward these occurrences with surpassing dumbness. The mother is played by a sadly dilapidated Yvonne de Carlo and she presides over the slack denouement of "Silent Scream" with a suitably wounded expression. The camera work, as we have come to expect from the young directors mining this genre, is quite adept, but Harris has to learn that it takes more than good shots to make murder gripping. "I've got some friends coming in from New Haven and we're going out on the town. Where can we find some good entertainment?" That kind of call comes along several times a week, and I'm always glad to answer.

There is a lot of fine entertainment all over center city just about every day in the week. I usually begin my response by ticking off some places in center city with good shows and no cover or minimum. I think the consistently best show in town these days is singer Joel Fleisher and pianist Jim Dell'Orefice. They perform every night but Sunday in the O'Brien Lounge at the Fairmont Hotel. The effort that those two put forth every night is genuinely remarkable.

And they are as talented as they are hard-working. It's hard to beat a show like that for the price of a drink. There is a different show every night at Rick's Cabaret on Front Street at Fitzwater. I'm particularly impressed with the Metropole Jazz Band, an old-time Dixie-Chicago style of band that plays Sunday afternoons and evenings. Another terrific act at Rick's is Barbara Knox and Frederick Schwartz.

They play there Thursday nights and at P. on Front Street near Market on Tuesday nights, beginning today. Miss Knox is a powerful singer with a gospel background and Schwartz is a classically trained pianist. One of the best jazz groups in town, the John Di Martino Trio with Mar-lyn Merrett, plays at Rick's on Saturday nights. The Benny Nelson Trio, another dynamite jazz group, plays regularly at P.

and is joined on Thursdays by Sarah Dean and on Saturdays by Donna Jean, both of them impressive singers. Speaking of impressive singers, you probably have never heard anybody just like the dynamic Rubin Wright, who sings every night at Purgatory, the after-hours place over Nick's Roast Beef on Second Street. There is a good show every night also at the East Philly Cafe, with Ralph Dino and Larry DiTommasso playing most nights. Dino is a songwriter with some original and clever songs, some of which are composed right on the bandstand. One of my favorite places is the Bull Shot Tavern, a little bar on San-som Street near 20th.

I like it because you never know what kind of show you will see there. The crowd is a mixture of neighborhood people and campus youths. The entertainment ranges far afield, including such diverse types as folk music and rock roll. But the best performer appearing at the Bull Shot is Bob Tangrea, who plays a lot of instruments and sings quite well. His most-requested songs, "Broken Man," "Fire in Her Eyes," are songs written by him.

Tangrea is a large talent waiting to be discovered. There also is live music every night at J. Dobbs on South Street, Eakins on Third Street and the Khy-ber Pass on Second Street. The entertainers there are often just beginning, but you sometimes find some real talent. There is good jazz with Bob Cohen at the Borgia Cafe, and the fine jazz pianist John D'Amico is now playing at the new Lily's in NewMarket.

One of the best piano players that I have ever heard is a woman called Mother Light, who plays and occasionally sings every Thursday night at the Drury Lane, a gay bar on Dru- This lightweight film telegraphs its punch Such was the path of John Carpenter and Fred Walton a Stranger The latest aspirant is Denny Harris, a new director who has called his melange "Silent Scream." The film manages to be crude and ineffective for the apparent reason that Harris is so absorbed in technique in how a grasping hand or wielded knife is to be filmed that he has ignored just about every other aspect of making a film. The terrain is familiar an ominous mansion warrened with secret passages and threatening doors Between a series of sluggish sight gags, "The Prize Fighter" repeats itself and takes forever to get on with a modest story that might consume a tolerable half hour on television. It is set in the Thirties, even though its deference to the period scarcely goes beyond a couple of old cars, and directed by Michael Preece in a way that makes its small jokes even more feeble than they have to be. Conway is a fighter who has lost 20 of his 20 fights by knockouts. He is recruited by a mobster played by Robin Clarke to participate in a scheme that grows sillier with each passing scene.

By matching Conway against a series of club fighters, who are told to take a dive, Wayne guides him to the championship fight. The purpose is to gyp the lovable gym owner David Wayne in a quite passable pastiche of Burgess Meredith's "Rocky" appearances into betting on the fight. There is ample room in this empty idea for Knotts and Conway to wear out their welcome and "The Prize Fighter" takes a dive long before the first fight. fib iick LAlf4YiM t. .1 J.

ry lane near 13th and Chestnut Streets. There are also a couple of cabarets in town. The Old Philadelphia Cabaret Theater, 126 Chestnut is now running the musical "Piano Bar." The cabaret is a handsome and comfortable room in which you can order drinks and food. "Piano Bar," by the way, will be followed shortly by "Dracula Baby," a crazy musical now in rehearsals. "Oh Coward!" just closed at Gren-del's Lair, a less lavish cabaret at Fifth and South Streets.

The next production at Grendel's will be "El Grande de Coca Cola," a musical set in, of all places, Trujillo, Honduras. And there are, of course, nightclubs: Burgundy Room at the Fairmont, the perennial Philadelphia institution Palumbo's in South Philadelphia and Pagano's in West Philadelphia. But for now, I've concentrated mostly on center city bars that provide entertainment for pub crawlers. Ms. Everitt to manage Opera Co.

Margaret Anne Everitt has been named acting manager of the Opera Company of Philadelphia. At 32, she is the youngest woman manager of a major company in the country. She succeeds Edward Corn who is leaving in May to head the music theater program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Ms. Everitt joined the Opera Company in 1977 as director of planning.

She produced "Rumpelstiltskin," which was premiered here and kept as a Christmas opera, and has been responsible for the company's activity outside the Academy of Music. The company's education programs, its performances at Longwood Gardens in the Brandywine Festival, the workshops at the O'Neill Theater Festival and the production this year of an opera during the Noguchi exhibit at the Museum of Art have also been her The company's president, Dr. Francesco Leto, said Ms. Everitt would run the company while the board sought an artistic director. Tenor Jon Vickers has canceled his performances today and Friday in the Opera Company of Philadelphia's "Pagliacci" at the Academy of Music.

Vickers bowed out last week because of illness. inquirer Movie Critic The boxing comedy apart from some unintentional hilarity in "The Champ" and "Rocky has not fared well lately, and "The Prize LFighter" is not a film that improves matters. The film is yet another sad commentary on the general quality of movies directed at family audiences that seem, these days, to consist of dumb comedies and the Bible according to Schick Sunn Classic Productions. Here, two of the more trying around Don Knotts and Conway are paired once again 'as an inept boxer and his trainer. As their outings for the Disney studio have amply demonstrated, Knotts and Conway depend almost' entirely on their both being fools, with only the level of gullibility separating them. There is very little that "can be done with the combination beyond repeating it in various guises and that is the choice made by "The Prize Fighter," which Conway wrote with the help, if that's the proper wword, of John Myhers.
