In 1760 George III ascended the British throne upon the death of his grandfather, King George II. In 1825 the Erie Canal, America's first man-made waterway was opened.

(The canal links the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.) In 1854 British forces staged the Charge of the Light Brigade in Russia in the Crimean War. In 1892 President Benjamin Harrison's wife, Caroline Lavinia, died in the White House at age 60. In 1911 the Everleigh Club, Chicago's opulent brothel at 2131 S. Dearborn St. was ordered closed by Mayor Carter Harrison II.

(The brothel had been open for 12 years.) In 1929 former Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall was convicted of accepting a $100,000 bribe in connection with the Elk Hills Naval Oil Reserve in California. In 1954 a session of the U.S. Cabinet was televised for the first time. In 1968 a Northeast Airlines prop jet crashed into a mountain in New Hamp'shire, killing 42 people.

In 1971 the United Nations seated the People's Republic of China and expelled Taiwan. In 1975 the Soviet Union landed a second spacecraft on the surface of Venus. (The probe sent back photographs showing a terrain far different from the rugged, rock-strewn landing site of the first craft.) In 1984, in a speech in New York, Secretary of State George Shultz said the U.S. must be willing to use military force to combat terrorism even if it meant "the loss of life of some innocent people." In 1993 Canada's Liberal Party ended nine years of rule by the Progressive Conservatives in national elections. (Liberal leader Jean Chretien became prime minister, succeeding Kim Campbell.) In 1995 seven students en route to Cary-Grove High School were killed and nearly 30 injured when their school bus was struck by a Metra commuter train at a crossing in northwest suburban Fox River Grove.

Frank Morrell, Professor of Neurological Sciences, Rush Medical College and Senior Attending, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. Dr. Morrell, a neurologist, was the founder and director of the Rush Epilepsy Center. A pioneer in epilepsy research and treatment, he was deeply committed to patient care and is affectionately remembered by his patients.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of neurology, he was recently named the A. Watson Armour Ill and Sarah Armour Presidential Protessor. He has spent many summers doing research at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Dr. Morrell is survived by his wife, Leyla, to whom he was both loving husband and research collaborator; his sister Barbara Leeds; his children, Seth and his wife Laura, Paul, Michael, Suzanna, and their mother Lenore; as wellas by his aunt Esther Citrin.

Mary worked there and at other area hospitals for many years. She subsequently worked in retail sales after her retirement.

Harold Hughes of Iowa; aided alcoholics ASSOCIATED PRESS OP DES MOINES -Harold Hughes, a truck driver who beat alcoholism to become a three-term governor of Iowa and a U.S. senator, died Thursday in Glendale, where he had retired.

He was 74. Mr. Hughes quit politics at the height of his popularity, retiring from the Senate after one term in 1974 to devote himself to lay religious work and open the Harold Hughes Center for alcoholism treatment. The last Democrat elected governor of Iowa, he was often credited with making the party a competitive force in a state that had been dominated by Republicans. "He just understood people really well," said Sen.

Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). "He came from the wrong side of the tracks and he was never afraid to talk about that. He always stuck up for people who started from the bottom." Mr. Hughes fought in North Africa during World War II. After he returned, he become a truck driver and began his struggle with alcohol.

He was elected to the Iowa Commerce Commission in 1958. Four years later, he ousted Republican Gov. Norman Erbe in a campaign in which legalizing liquor by the drink was a central issue. Mr. Hughes favored legalization.

Mr. Hughes defeated David Stanley in 1968 for the Senate. With his deep, booming voice, Harold Hughes in 1973 219 Mr. Hughes nominated Eugene McCarthy for president at the 1968 Democratic National Con-71 vention in Chicago. 24, 1996. Mr. Kragie was born and educated in the public schools of Chicago. Following graduation from Lane Technical High School he enlisted in the Army, and served with the 33rd Inf. Div.

in the Pacific during WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star, among other citations. He also served in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1974 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war, Mr.

Kragie was a member of the Chicago Police Department, from which he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Northwestern University Traffic Institute in 1951. From 1956-1964, he served as a member of the Institute's faculty, conducting training and evaluation programs for law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S., Canada and South America. Mr. Kragie was recruited by Indiana University to be Director of the Center for Police Training and a faculty member of the Department of Forensic Studies in 1964. While carrying a full teaching load, Mr.

Kragie earned an A.B. in Police Administration ('69), an M.S. in Counselling and Guidance ('70) and an Ed.D. in Administration of Higher Education ('81). From 1978 until his retirement in 1987, Mr.

Kragie was Assistant Dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Dean Kragie was nationally recognized for expanding higher education opportunities for law enforcement personnel, and locally, for counseling students interested in public service. Kragie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret; his three children, John H. Kragie Jr. of Des Moines, Margaret M.
