Dearborn Chicago. 0102 19196 Susan Jean Armstrong Susan Jean Armstrong, 39, of Winthrop Harbor, who was interested in history and literature related to the Civil War, died at home Monday of lung cancer. Ms. Armstrong was born in Newport, and grew up in Lombard. She was a 1975 graduate of Glenbard East High School.

For the past 12 years, Ms. Armstrong worked on the medication production line at the Baxter Labs in Round Lake. In her free time, she enjoyed reading about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. She is survived by a son, Jonathan Vandekerkhoff; two daughters, Angelika Vandekerkhoff and Nicole Vandekerkhoff; her mother, Lois Armstrong; a sister; a granddaughter; and her fiance, Curly Bobrick. Services will be at 10 a.m.

Thursday in Marsh Funeral Home of Waukegan, 1521 Washington Waukegan. Michael V. Simon Michael V. Simon, 75, former acting director of the Chicago office of the U.S. Department of Commerce, died Monday in Hospice North Shore at Evanston Hospital.

Born and reared on Chicago's West Side, Mr. Simon graduated from Marshall High School. He enlisted in the Army in World War II, serving in Europe in 1944-1945. He was a University of Illinois graduate. At Dun Bradstreet, he rose to the position of director of market research during his nine years there.

He then joined the Department of Commerce, advising small businesses and leading international trade missions overseas. The department awarded him the Bronze Medal for service to Illinois business in 1975. He retired in 1989, after 33 years with the department, but continued his work as a volunteer for the Service Corps of Retired Executives. Mr. Simon was a longtime scoutmaster in Evanston.

He also had been a member of Mikdosh El Hagro Hebrew Center in Evanston since it was founded. Survivors include his wife, Anita; a son, Kent; a daughter, Debra; a brother; and two grandchildren. Services were Wednesday. Joanne Clarke Stoltz Joanne Clarke Stoltz, 61, a resident of Palatine and former administrative assistant at Town and Country Mall in Arlington Heights, died Tuesday at home after a long illness. She formerly lived in Arlington Heights and Evanston.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Steagall and Lori; three sons, Daniel, Timothy and J. Thomas; a sister; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Ahlgrim Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine.
