Vesuvius erupted and buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. In 1572 the slaughter of French Protestants by Roman Catholics began in Paris on St. Bartholomew's Day. (Nearly 20,000 Huguenots were killed by October throughout France.) In 1814 British soldiers invaded Washington, burning the Capitol and the White House. In 1932 Amelia Earhart became the first female pilot to fly nonstop across the United States.

(Her Los Angeles-to-Newark trip took 19 hours minutes.) In 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty went into effect, with its parties agreeing that an armed attack against one would be considered "an attack against them all." In 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Communist Control Act, which outlawed the Communist Party in America. (Membership in the party, however, was not declared a crime.) In 1956 the first nonstop transcontinental helicopter flight was completed: 2,610 miles in 31 hours and 40 minutes. In 1959 Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii was sworn as the first Japanese-American member of the House of Representatives, and Hiram L. Fong, also from Hawaii, was sworn as the first Chinese-American in the Senate.

In 1964 a fireworks explosion in Atlatahuca, Mexico, during a religious celebration killed 45 people and injured 33. In 1968 France became the world's fifth thermonuclear Gail R. Johnson, former funeral director Bernie Christianson, 58, of Salem, VA, native of Chicago, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1995, of natural causes. He was a playwrite, producer and an accomplished mucisian.

Bernie a musical career debut was In 1949 when he was Invited to "step up to the microphone to sing Galway Bay" while visiting Don McNeill's Breakfast Club. After touring with the club, Bernie pursued a career with Amoco Corporation along with continuing in his musical career. After retirement In 1981 with Amoco, Bernie pursued a full-time musical career In show business in southwest Florida, including writing and producing the dramamusical "Hey Lady" in Port Charlotte, FL, in 1984, and again In Clearwater, FL, In 1987. He also wrote and produced a benefit show for F.A.C.E., and radio commercials. Bernie was a member of the A.S.C.A.P.

and played for many private clubs In Florida. He la aurvtved by daughters Julie R. (Rob) Boucher and Dolores (Rick) Lundgren, all of North Port, FL; sons Dave (Pam) Christianson and Mike (Tina) Christianson, all of Salem; sisters Biddy Lehnert of Chicago and Barbara Wlngard of Florida; seven grandchildren. Diana Woo, 54, a pediatrics' professor at the University of Chi- cago, died of cancer Friday at the University of Chicago Hospitals. The Hyde Park resident was an; associate professor of clinical' pediatrics at the University of. Chicago Medical Center and the; associate dean for admissions at the university's Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Woo joined the faculty in 1971 and had spent 15 years caring for children and critically ill uv fants at Wyler Children's Kwang-sun Lee, a professor of pediatricts and obstetrics and gynecology at Pritzker, said Dr.

Woo was an outstanding clinician' who showed dedication and compassion for the families and the' children. "She valued colleagues and friends and was a wonderful role model for students, contributing a great deal" to the medical school, he said. A native of Milwaukee, Dr. Woo did her undergraduate studies at Mt. Mary College and earned her medical degree from Pritzker in 1968.

She did her residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children's' Hospital in 1970 and was on the medical staffs of number of Chi-, cago hospitals. I Survivors include her Sean Duggan; two Catherine and Elizabeth; her; mother, Martha Woo; a brother, Dr. A. Stephen Woo; and a sister, JoAnna Allen.
