San Mateo 14. Mission DFG sets dates, regs to hunt in 1996-98 Deer hunters will be able to hunt bears during general deer seasons under a proposed change in the 1996-98 hunting regulations. The Fish and Game Commission was scheduled to review the proposed seasons and rules at a meeting in Redding March 7-8. The proposed bear season would open simultaneously with general deer season openers (except zones), during which hunters would be limited to one dog per hunter. In areas where the deer season is closed, the use of unlimited numbers of dogs for hunting bears would not begin until the second Saturday in October.

Under the proposed rules, a hunter would be allowed to use only one dog in areas where the deer and bear seasons overlap. The proposal provides increased bear hunting opportunities for hunters. The bear season would still end Dec. 31 or whenever 1,500 bears have been taken, whichever comes first. Additional hunts for elk, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep and hunting and trapping of non-native red foxes are also among the proposals submitted to the Fish and Game Commission by the Department of Fish and Game.

The department proposed 16 additional special deer hunts, primarily antlerlcss or either-sex, nine of which were vetoed by counties that have veto authority. The remaining hunts are still under consideration by the Commission pending the results of winter deer surveys. The deadline to apply for big game hunts will move up three weeks to June 3, 1996. The change in deadline and earlier drawings for tags will give hunters more time to plan their hunts Big game booklets describing the hunts will be available in April. Licenses, tags and applications will be distributed to vendors April 15.

Some hunts will still be subject to final approval at the Fish and Game 419 Lassen v. Chlco 4 p.m. 420 Laaaen v. Sparks, Nev. 10 a.m.

of kills statewide Continued from page 4 for hunters, even though hunter averages were lower. "All in all, it was at best an average season," Yparraguirre said. "It started slowly with the lull in the middle, but the last three weeks were pretty good for area was third in capacity at 16,450 and visits with 10,068. The leader in average waterfowl shot per hunter was the San Jacinto state area at 2.65, followed by Joice Island at 2.51. Mendota averaged 2.25 and Gray Lodge 1.90.

most duck hunters." Mendota has the highest visitor capacity with 27,000 but trailed Gray Lodge in total number of hunter visits. Gray Lodge, with scheduled capacity of 18,000 had 14,649 hunter visits to 11,823 for Mendota. Grizzly Island state zones since many hunters obtain tags for both zones. The Fish and Game Commission is considering an alternative bag limit for a three-point antler restriction in zones XI through X5c. Proposed new big game hunts include tule elk at Fort Hunter Liggett in Monterey County with 30 tags to be divided between military and civilian hunters.

A new hunt for Roosevelt elk in the Marble Mountains of Siskiyou County would have 25 either-scx tags. New desert bighorn sheep hunts are recommended in the Orocopia Mountains ahd the San Gorgonio Wilderness With a total of three tags. DFG also seeks approval of a new pronghorn area with five tags on the Carrizo see Seasons, page 13) Commission's scheduled April 25 meeting. Deer hunting zones will have a range of tags instead of the current fixed number. For example, Zone A now has 65,000 tags, but that will change to a range of 30,000 to 65,000 and Zone X-l from a fixed 3,000 to a range of 1,000 to 7,000.

The final allocation of tags would depend on herd and habitat conditions in DFG's spring herd surveys. The deer season would be extended by a week in seven zones to provide additional huntirig opportunity and better hunting conditions without adversely affecting deer populations. These include Zone B-l, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, C-l and D-7. Opening day for Zones C-l through C-4 would be one week later to conform with most r-t-K riit1 1991 ISUZU RODEO Sport Utility, 4 V6. AC.
