This month, Forbes magazine ranked him as the nation's 249th richest person, estimating his worth at more than $490 million. Mr. Ellis started buying a collection of Florida banks in the 1950s and 1960s, long before chain banking was common. "He correctly saw the growth of the West Coast of Florida at a time that none of us did," said Dudley Salley, a Tarpon Springs commissioner who was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta when Mr.

Ellis was a director there. He developed his chain into the Ellis Banking which grew to 75 branches in 16 counties with assets of $1.6 billion. He sold out to NCNB Corp. of Charlotte, N.C.,' in 1983 for $177 million. The key to his success, Mr.

Ellis once said, was simple: "Good friends and good credit." serve the needs of your family with the care and dignity you have come lo value for the last 106 years. iTi 1 i 1 1 1.5 fr I 4 i i I MEMORIAL CHAPELS Whll 10101 I Chicago 1 2t 761 -24tM Wilmrm 7m 25(i-57(H) tfmiM-ml raJraJraJraJraliaJilar lM a ULiwrmoiMimiikMiLOUw and two sisters.
