One is Denny; the other Dean. Both are singers, and both are very much in the public eye right now. First Denny.

The new year brought a new record for the Phoenix singer, and its a dandy. It's one of those platters that create a lot of conversation as to which side will win the battle of spins. Take your choice: there's a smooth ballad clefed by Our Town's Connie and Norma Conway titled "No One Cares." Give it a flip and you'll find a bouncy beat tune about a "Lonely Little Bluebird." The ballad is the best. But the "Bluebird" side is getting an edge on spins especially in the East. It isn't particularly exciting, material, but the boys in the studio gave the song an almost fantastic arrangement, which gives it a salable sound.

"NO ONE CARES" shows off Reed's extremely fine vocal qualities so very well. Giving a new talent such as Reed a tune like this for his second outing on disk is a questionable move. Sometimes no matter how fine the side, scoring with this type of tune is difficult, but it does happen. "A Teenager Feels It, Too," Reed's disk debut, made the national charts. Locally, the new Trey record is sure to find a nice spot for itself on Phoenix tune listings.

It's now a pretty much established fact that Reed is one of the best, if not the best, vocal talent to come out of Phoenix in years, but it takes a hit record to let the whole country know about it. As fine as the record is, its national chances of being proclaimed a resotiftding hit are somewhat limited. It's just a personal opinion (and I hate to say it) but I can't quite see the new Reed record gathering the sales that his first disk did last summer. If I'm wrong I'll be glad. Dean's the boy who sang all about "The Search" two seasons ago and connected nicely with the Capitol label.

The record firm gave him unlimited promotion, but didn't exactly let him cut the type of song material that kids wanted to buy. They seemed to be more in- i Labeling The Records terested in putting out nice records, not the kind that sell. Now he's cutting for an independent label. In fact, he cut a series of tunes the other evening at Audio Recorders in Phoenix. Today ends a short vacation for Reed and soon he'll go to South America, where he has a real welcome waiting for him.

His platter, "Don't Lrt Her Go," may not have found spin success in this country, South Americans love it, and it's a top tune in many areas down there. Soooo Dean heads for the continent to the south in March and is looking forward to "having a ball." Then he goes back to Hollywood for more instruction on becoming a top star someday. And you know what? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Dean Reed finds real fame in the future. Already he's got a head start, cause South America digs him The Most. ALL EDITIONS JM.
