Miss Annie E. Kemp, known as Reading's "Grand Old Lady of Music," and internationally acclaimed for her biographies of noted composers, died today at her home, 522 Walnut after an illness of six weeks. She was 91. Miss Kemp, a retired music teacher, won world-wide recognition for her biography on Handel, published two years ago, and the volume was listed by the Library of Congress. Other biographies which brought her fame Included Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

She was born July 20, 1859, In Hamburg, a member of one of the oldest families in Berks county. Her great-grandfather was a captain in the Continental Army and her father served in the Union Army. Miss Kemp was a pupil of Winston Balteell and later studied with Con-stantin von Sternberg, noted Russian teacher, who established a school of music in Philadelphia. She specialized in piano and what she termed a "musical kindergarten." In later years, one of her special projects was giving aid to youths seeking careers in music and art. She was the oldest active member of the Reading Woman's Club and conducted the club's chorus, which she formed more thar 20 years ago.

She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Second Reformed Church and St. Paul's Reformed Church.
