news show Co-stars add cheer to 'Cheers' weatherman Jay Parmoon, a recent University of Arizona graduate who interned at the station. Taped segments by Dave Silver, the station's sports director, will also be part of the program. KGUN will interview national VIPs when they are available here. Although there is a basic format, Foster said it will be flexible, allowing him to have such options as focusing a show off a single theme. Foster may pre-tape features, but he said the show will emphasize live broadcasting.

National footage will be made available by ABC and CNN, while a KGUN crew will provide local video. "We're committed to this broadcast," Depa said. "It's not on for 13 weeks (like a pilot series). We believe the time period is right." Depa said advertisers are buying spots at a "brisk" pace. "It's a good money-maker," Foster said.

"That's how they (station heads) look at it. I look at it as a chance to do a good news Jim Radcliffe The Arizona Daily Star KGUN-TV, Channel 9 wants you to enjoy Bud with your eggs. On Monday, Bud Foster's "The 6:30 News" will debut. A half-hour, news-oriented show, the live telecast will offer a format similar to that used by network morning shows but with a local bent. The show will be a lead-in for "Good Morning America," the ABC morning newscast and talk show.

Monday through Friday, Foster will provide local and international news, as well as weather reports, a sports segment, traffic conditions and interviews with Tucson-area and national newsmakers. Channel 9's show, which Foster will host and for which he will act as executive producer, replaces the last 30 minutes of an hour-long, ABC-newscast; KGUN will instead broadcast a CNN-produced newscast at 6 a.m. "You'll get a feel for what happened to our town, our country over- night," said Ray Depa, KGUN's news director. It is probably Tucson's first attempt at this format, Foster and Depa said. "I think within a year, the other networks will try it," Foster said.

KGUN, an ABC affiliate, hired Foster after he left KVOA-TV, Channel 4. Foster, 37, was a news anchor at that station for five years before being replaced in mid-June by John Vallentine. Foster was re-assigned to a reporter's position, but quit KVOA when his contract expired Aug. 8. At KGUN, Foster will also report for the nightly broadcasts.

KGUN believes Tucson is ready for "The 6:30 News." In November, Depa said, 37,000 local television sets were on at that time. About 11,000 were watching ABC's newscast, he added. "The 6:30 News" concept was discussed before Foster became available, Depa said. But Foster "brings instant recognition to it," Depa said. York Daily News LOS ANGELES If Ted Danson and his new "Cheers" co-star Kirstie Alley get along on camera like they did at at a press conference last week, the NBC Thursday night comedy series is good for another five years. The sexy Alley, dressed in a mini denim skirt, sat close to Danson, who, by fondling her knee occasionally, was determined to display to the group the chemistry between them. "Hey, we're hot," declared Danson, who shed no public tears over the departure of Shelley Long (Diane Chambers) from the series. Neither did James Burrows, executive producer with his partners Glen and Les Charles. Burrows feels the new direction will be good.

Actually, he said, they were going back to their original series concept. 'Cheers' was conceived as a (Spencer) Tracy-(Katharine) Hepburn type of series," he explained. "The woman was supposed to be an executive, and he an ex-professional ballplayer. But through an evolution she became a more pretentious college student." Burrows emphasized the essence of the series is the "Cheers" bar, which of course remains intact. "Had Long stayed for a sixth and maybe seventh season," he added, "we probably would have gone into marriage and made it a domestic Alley, best remembered for playing an abolitionist in "North and South" and Gloria Steinem in "A tyrant.

We wanted somebody who can be a sympathetic character." As for the on-air relationship, Burrows said, "Sam will be attracted to Rebecca, but she won't find Sam attractive, which he finds very strange. She's concerned with the bar." Other developments in the series this fall, Burrows said: "Carla (Rhea Perlman), who will immediately dislike Rebecca, will legitimize her Cliff takes a step in his life toward manhood, Frasier's romance progresses and Woody will move." As for Diane, who was eased out of the series with taste she's off writing a book there are no plans so far to bring her back. But what a one-shot episode her return might make there would be more chemistry than even Danson could Bunny Tale," enters "Cheers" as Rebecca Howe, Sam's new boss and the bar's manager. He has sold the bar and is reduced to being a bartender, which is likely to cause some fireworks on the show this fall. Nonetheless, Danson is not dismayed.

"I think the relationship will be great. I love the idea of having a boss. Now the conflict doesn't have to be dumb-bright so much. It gives me the liberty to be anti-establishment to be naughty and not quite so tragic." Alley, describing her character, said, "She's an executive gone askew. She's really trying to do a good job for the corporation that bought the bar.

Maybe she hasn't been that good in other areas for them. Now her job is on the line." Burrows added: "It was important to us not to make her an ogre or a AM). Five-year study program with the Rev. J. Vernon McGee.
