MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1988 THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL Fires FIRE LOG Continued from Page 1 bad day for fires," Lemus said. At the scene this morning were 40 engines, 10 bulldozers, 10 handcrews, two helicopters, one aerial bomber and three water tenders. There was no estimate of containment or control this morning, Lemus said. North of Mendocino County, CDF is pulling crews off its almostcontrolled Shelter Cove Fire and redeploying them to two aggressive fires in Del Norte County. A fire nine miles south of Crescent City has been dubbed the Klamath Fire.

First reported late Sunday afternoon, the Klamath Fire has been supported by unusually warm, dry weather and strong northerly winds. About 350 firefighters are battling the blaze, which is three miles southwest of a 40- to 50-house development called Hunter Creek, Fire Information Officer Tom Hoffman at CDF's Humboldt County headquarters said. The development is in peril, and local officials are making contingency evacuation plans if the fire changes direction. CDF planners still had not obtained good intelligence on the fire late this morning, although spotter planes were being dispatched and were expected to delivof the fire area earlier this afternoon. Winds died down this morning, but Hoffman said normal weather patterns would indicate a return of the gusts later this afternoon.

There was no estimate of containment or control on the firc. Eight miles north of Crescent City, near where a state prison is being built Pelican Bay, CDF crews are trying to stop a small but pesky wildland firc that is spotting across containment lines because of OBITUARIES Nellie McCoy A funeral for Nellie McCocy, 92, sister, Julia Adams, of Los Angeles. who died Friday at her Ukiah home, She was preceded in death by her will be held 2 p.m. today at St. husband, Jack, in 1976.

WEATHER By The Associaled Press Extended forecast Wednesday through Friday Night and moming cloudiness and fog along the coast, otherwise fair. Near normal temperatures. Coast highs upper 50s and 60s. Lows 40s and 50s.

Coastal valley highs 60s to mid-80s. Lows 40s and 50s. Interior valley highs mid-80s to mid-90s. Lows 50s and lower 60s. Mountain resort highs 70s.

Lows upper 30s and 40s. State summary Skies are expected to remain clear for the next few days over California, except for the usual fog and low clouds which have settled on the coast, the National Weather Service said. Gusty winds are forecast to continue from the north or northeast over the northern half of the state until Tuesday, especially in the mountains, forecasters said. A shallow layer of fog covered much of the California coast Sunday night. The fog layer became thicker farther south and was deep enough along the Central California coast to spread inland throughout the Salinas Valley.

The far north coast remained clear. In addition, skies were clear elsewhere over the inland areas of California except for a layer of smoke which spread southward from a large fire near Grass Valley in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Marysville. The fire was fanned by strong gusty northeast winds blowing over the Sierra Nevada. Equipment at Mt. Diablo recorded winds of 40 mph at 5 a.m.

Monday. Early morning temperatures were affected by the wind at many locations. Gusty wind causes warmer than normal temperatures by stirring warm air aloft down to the surface. Temperatures in much of the Sacramento Valley were in the lower 70s resulting from gusty north wind. The temperature at Crescent was 71 degrees, which is 3 degrees higher than the normal high temperature.

The remainder of the state had near normal lows last night, ranging from the 50s to lower 60s in most areas. Highs on Sunday across the state were mostly in the upper 70s and 80s, with temperatures as high 90 in Bakersfield, and 104 in the Palm Springs area. National summary Rain fell today from northeastern Minnesota across the Plains to Arizona, while a storm dusted Wyoming's northern mountains with less than 4 inches of snow. Showers and a few thunderstorms also were scattered in the central Gulf Coast states, the Tennessee Valley, the southern Ohio Valley and central Mississippi Valley, and the Florida peninsula. Dry weather prevailed across the rest of the nation, with clear skies over Washington state, Oregon, California, Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and much of New England.

Temperatures were in the 70s early today from the southern Plains through much of the Mississippi Valley to the southern Atlantic Coast. Other readings: 30s in the northern Rockies; 40s and 50s in the central United States, northern Atlantic local winds. Called the Prison Fire, the fire. was reported late Sunday afternoc and blackened 35 acres by this morning. Hoffman said the fire was 30 percent contained, with no estimate when full containment would occur.

Both Del Norte County fires are being fed by heavy industrial timber lands, Hoffman said. There was good news at the Shelter Cove Fire, where containment is expected by tonight and control by Tuesday morning. Cause of the Sonoma County and two new Del Norte County fires is under investigation. Fire calls The Ukiah Fire Department answered these calls during the weekend: 11:52 a.m. Friday, 3260 N.
