Coming to Arizona are defensive lineman Stan Mataele and Danny Lockett, who plays outside linebacker and lineman.

The UA's regular defensive linemen during the past season, tackles David Wood and John Barthalt have used their eligibility. Nose guard Joe Drake has yet to announce whether he will return for a fifth season. Mataele, 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, played two seasons at Sacramento City College in Sacramento, Calif. He reportedly runs the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds. He was on the track team at Sacramento, and had a season- best of 195 feet in the hammer throw last spring.

That throw would have placed sixth at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships, UA associate sports information director Tom Duddleston said. Mataele might join the UA track team, Duddleston said. Mataele chose the UA over Washington State and San Diego State. Lockett, 6-3, 225 pounds, played one season at the University of Georgia and last season at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. Punter Ruben Rodriguez, who signed a UA letter-of-intent last week, is also from the College of the Sequoias.

Mataele and Lockett are to have two years of eligibility at Arizona and are expected to enroll for the spring semester. Cougars prove they deserve top ranking Continued from Page ID further convince BYU it was in control. BYU had 224 yards at half, Michigan, 125. "We felt fortunate and confident," Edwards said. "After all that had gone wrong, we were still leading." The first quarter was scoreless but Michigan established it wasn't going to be able to do what Schem-bechler had wished: control the ball and keep BYU's offense off the field.

The Wolverines' first four possessions were for spans of 1:17, 4:43, 2:27 and 1:59, and allowed the Cougars to tread water while Bosco was getting his injured left ankle treated in the dressing room. When Bosco returned, at 12:09 of the second quarter, the Cougars had the ball at their 20. No score. Bosco, limping badly, completed five of seven passes. He did a hip-pity-hop scramble of 13 yards for a first-down to the Michigan 26 on a third-down play.

That was both inspiration and offense enough to set "New ballgame," said Schem-bechler, who gave back three points (a 32-yard field goal by Bob Bergeron) to accept a roughing-the-kicker penalty and a first down at the BYU 10. A new ballgame it again became when Bosco completed four passes the final 1:08. The Cougars covered 79 yards and got a 31-yard field goal from Lee Johnson for a 10-7 lead. "We established ourselves but we didn't get a good return on the scoreboard," Edwards said. "It hurt." It indeed haunted the Cougars, who continued to make mistakes at the wrong time in the period.

BYU's first three possessions in the third quarter all crossed midfield, but the Cougars didn't score. Why? An interception on a tipped pass, a fumble by Bosco attempting to pass on the Michigan 25 and a blocked field-goal attempt on a drive that reached Michigan's 36. Instead, it was Michigan that patched together a touchdown drive of 47 yards after the blocked field goal attempt. Chris Zurbrugg threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Bob Perry-man. And, presto, Michigan led, 14-10.

BYU's philanthropy continued seemingly unabated when Kely Smith fumbled on the last play of the third period. Worse, Michigan recovered at BYU's 12 and got a 32-yard field goal from Bergeron. Michigan led, 17-10, with 14:14 remaining, which still didn't seem to shake the Cougars. BYU trailed, 14-9, at Pitt and 38-33 at Wyoming in the fourth period and rallied to win. In other words, it took the Cougars eight plays to go 80 yards and tie the game at 17.

A 7-yard touchdown pass, Bosco to Glen Koslowski, came with 10:51 remaining. A BIG SELECTION OF HOUSEHOLD PERSONAL up a live-yard touchdown run by Kelly Smith 8:37 before half. At the time, BYU had 171 yards, Michigan 55. It appeared to be cave-in time for the Wolverines when punter Mark Robbins was tackled at his five-yard-line after a high snap. "I thought we had 'em then," Edwards said.

"But we just weren't opportunistic." Bosco, on third down from the two, fumbled into the end zone and Michigan recovered. The Wolverines then moved 80 yards for a touchdown. Rick Rogers scored on a five-yard run with 1 13 left in the half. What had looked surely to be a 14-0 BYU lead and a potential rout was instead a tie at 7.
