He was past president of the parish council of the United Greek Orthodox Churches of Chicago as well as of the Hellenic Foundation. A resident of the Near North Side and formerly of the Lincoln Square neighborhood, he died at home Thursday. In his youth, he was an actor and magician. He took over the publication of The Saloniki after his father died in 1929.

He opened his realty business in 1933 and was one of the first in the city to promote and make use of multiple real estate listings. The United Greek Orthodox ALMANAC In 1934, gangster John Dil-linger was slain by FBI agents outside Chicago's Biograph Theater. On July 22, 1587, a second English colony, under Capt. John White, was established on Roanoke Island off North Carolina. (By 1591, all the colonists had vanished.) In 1849 Emma Lazarus, author of the poem "The New Colossus" carved at the base of the Statue of Liberty, was born in New York City.

In 1864 Gen. William Sherman's Union troops defeated Gen. John Hood's Confederate forces in the first battle of Atlanta. Gordon Amedee, 70, chairman of Chicago-based Borg-Warner Automotive came out of retirement in 1993 to serve in that capacity and direct the firm after it became an independent company. A resident of St. Ives, a suburb of Sydney, he died at home Friday. He had recently returned to his home as non-executive chairman of the company. Mr.

Amedee had spent more than 40 years with Borg-Warner (Australia) Ltd. and had been its managing director and chief executive before retiring in 1983. He then returned to serve as deputy chairman and chairman of the Australian subsidiary until it was sold in 1987. He remained active in the business world, serving as chairman andor director of several large Australian companies as well as Zenonas Puzinauskas Zenonas Puzinauskas, 75, a member of the Lithuanian National Basketball Team in 1937 and 1939 and principal of the Chicago YMCA High School, died Sunday. Mr.

Puzinauskas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania. He was well known as a scholar and athlete, holding several track and field records. He was the youngest member of the Lithuanian National Basketball teams that won two European championships. Mr. Puzinauskas fled Lithuania in 1944 to Austria and then to Germany after the Soviet occupation.

In Germany, he worked as an interpreter for the American military staff and with war refugees through organizations such as the YMCA. Mr. Puzinauskas and his family immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Chicago. He worked with various youth programs for the Chicago YMCA before serving as principal of the Chicago YMCA High School in the late 1960s. He was a member of the board of the Michigan City YMCA at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Ona; a daughter Dalia, Wendt; a sister; two brothers; and three grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday. Ernest W. Bates Ernest W. Bates, 81, retired superintendent of the Woodstock Water and Sewer Department, died Friday in his home in Woodstock.

He was born in Woodstock, and served in the Army in World War II. He retired from his city job in 1990 after more than 40 years of employment. He is survived by his wife, Mavis; three daughters, Rhonda Randall, Rhoda and Robyn; and seven grandchildren. She began her career by selling ads for Hearst Newspapers in the Midwest. In 1943, she and her husband founded Central Newspaper Inc. in Chicago, which is currently run by Mrs. Haddad's son, Emil D. Jr.
